Mickey "Guitar" Baker was a music instructor, and Sylvia Robinson was one of his pupils. His guitar stylings, especially the insane soloing on "Love Is Strange", inspired a plethora of guitarists, including Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground.
Mickey & Sylvia had a hit with "Love Is Strange" in 1957. They continued to record together until 1965. After that, Mickey had a successful career as a studio musician. Sylvia had a huge hit (#1 R&B, #3 Pop) in 1973 with the song "Pillow Talk", and later assisted in the formation of the Sugar Hill rap label.
"Love Is Strange" appeared on the soundtrack to Dirty Dancing.

Someone I’ve needed so long
For once unafraid I can go where life leads me and somehow I know I’ll be strong
For once I can touch what my heart used to dream of
Long before I knew
Someone warm like you
Who have my dreams come true
For once in my life I won't let sorrow hurt me
Not like it's hurt me before
For once I have someone I know won't desert me
I’m not alone anymore
For once I can say
This is mine you can’t take it
As long as I know I have love I can make it
For once in my life I have someone who needs me
For once I can say
This is mine you can’t take it
As long as I know I have love we can make it
For once in my life I have someone who needs me
The lyrics of Mickey & Sylvia's song "The Time of My Life" convey a deep sense of newfound love and strength in a relationship. The singer expresses a feeling of fulfillment and contentment in having someone who truly needs them, a feeling that has been longed for and cherished. This person has been sought after for a significant amount of time, and having them in their life now fills a void that has been empty for a while, bringing a sense of completion and purpose.
The lyrics also suggest a newfound sense of fearlessness and resilience that comes with this love. The singer feels unafraid to tread on new paths and embrace whatever life has in store for them, knowing that they have the support and love of their partner to lean on. This assurance of strength and courage suggests a deep sense of trust and security in the shared relationship, enabling the singer to face life's journey with confidence and determination.
The imagery of touching what the heart used to dream of signifies a realization of long-held aspirations and desires that may have seemed out of reach until this point. The mention of someone warm like the partner, who helps in making dreams come true, illustrates how love and companionship can bring about a sense of fulfillment and realization of one's deepest hopes and wishes. This connection between the singer's dreams and the presence of love in their life suggests a profound sense of gratitude and happiness in achieving what was once only imagined.
As the lyrics progress, there is a declaration of independence and self-assurance that comes with having this love in their life. The singer no longer allows sorrow to have power over them, as their newfound partner provides solace and reassurance, dispelling feelings of loneliness and abandonment. The notion of unity and strength in the bond is emphasized through the assertion that as long as there is love, they can overcome any adversity, marking a profound shift in perspective towards a more optimistic and empowered outlook on life and love.

Lyrics: Love
Love is strange
Lot of people
Take it for a game
Once you get it
You never want to quit, no no
After you've had it
You're in an awful fix
Many people
Don't understand, no no
They think loving
Is money in the hand
Your sweet loving
Is better than a kiss
When you leave me
Sweet kisses I miss
Sylvia
Yes, Mickey
How do you call your lover boy
Come here, lover boy
And if he doesn't answer
Oh lover boy
And if he still doesn't answer
I simply say
Baby, oh baby
My sweet baby, you're the one
Baby, oh baby
My sweet baby, you're the one
