Blame It On The Girls

He's got a face to make you fall on your knees
He's got money in the bank to thank and I guess
You could think he's livin' at ease
Like lovers of the open shore, what's the matter?
When you're sitting there with so much more, what's the matter?
When you're wondering what the hell to do
Blame it on the girls who know what to do
Blame it on the boys who keep hitting on you
Blame it on your mother for the things she said
Blame it on your father but you know he's dead
Blame it on the girls
Blame it on the boys
Blame it on the girls
Blame it on the boys
Life could be simple but you never fail
To complicate it every single time
You could have children and a wife, a perfect little life
But you blow it on a bottle of wine
Like a baby you're a stubborn child, what's the matter
Always looking for an axe to grind, what's the matter
While you're wondering what the hell to do
We were wishing we were lucky like you
Blame it on the girls who know what to do
Blame it on the boys who keep hitting on you
Blame it on your mother for the things she said
Blame it on your father but you know he's dead
Blame it on the girls
Blame it on the boys
Blame it on the girls
Blame it on the boys
Life could be simple but you never fail
To complicate it every single time
You could have children and a wife, a perfect little life
But you blow it on a bottle of wine
Blame it on the girls
Blame it on the boys
Blame it on the girls
Blame it on the boys
The lyrics of Mika's song "Blame It on the Girls" is a commentary on the human condition of blaming external factors for personal struggles and failures. The song starts off by describing a man with good looks, substantial wealth, and an easy life. However, despite having it all, he still finds himself dissatisfied and wondering what to do with his life. This is contrasted with the singer who wishes he was "ugly" like him, implying that the grass is always greener on the other side.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "blame it on the girls" and "blame it on the boys" several times. This could be interpreted as a commentary on how we tend to blame others for our problems, rather than taking responsibility ourselves. The singer suggests blaming one's mother, father, or even the opposite sex for one's struggles. The repeated chorus underscores the idea that blame and finger-pointing do not solve problems.
The lyrics also touch on the theme of self-destruction. The man with an easy life is compared to a baby, stubborn and inclined to self-sabotage. The singer suggests that he could have a "perfect little life" with a family and children, but he continues to squander his opportunities on alcohol. The repetition of the line "life could be simple but you never fail to complicate it every single time" emphasizes the tragic nature of this self-destructive behavior.
Overall, the lyrics of "Blame It on the Girls" reflect a deep understanding of the human psyche and the tendency to blame external factors for our problems and failures.

So criminally underrated. That first, spoken bit along with the “he’s got looks that books take pages to tell” have stuck with me for life. My favourite MIKA song.
