Maxine
Mike Rutherford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maxine, well have you been?
Maxine, long time no see
Maxine, such a surprise
Maxine, just look out tonight

I hear you been livin' in Paris
Under an assumed fame
They say that you've been married
If not in passion at least in name
Damn you, girl, it still hurts me
No man was ever safe, yeah
Taming the shrew comes easy
If any man knew your taste, Maxine

Maxine, how times have changed
Maxine, well nothing's the same
Maxine, everything's gone
Maxine, your home ain't your own

You suit those European clothes
In a foreign sort of way
You still wear that air of distinction
In your fatefully stunning way
Damn you, girl, it still hurts me
And the years just made it worse
In fact our love is divided
Between the blessed and the cursed, Maxine

Maxine, don't bring back the past
Maxine, life is too fast
Maxine, oh everything's changed
Maxine, nothing's the same
Maxine, Maxine

I do remember, do you remember
I still remember, do you remember
I still remember, do you still

i love mike's voice idk why everyone thinks he's bad (including himself)

@ThePontificatingAHole

Same here. He contributed backing vocals on Genesis songs as far back as their debut. I guess he compared himself to the dynamic personalities imbued in the vocals of Phil and Peter.

@wd4020

I agree. His voice is great. Only found this album today and I love it!!

@jeroenvuyk5035

Great song.It is amazing to hear Mike Rutherford solo.

@anibalbabilonia1867

Man I’ve been looking for this song for the past 35 years! I forgot who sang it! Glad I found it! Thanks for posting it!👌😎👍

@xanadu8468

Has a real TOTO vibe. Love it, Rutherford's voice is not bad, but this song would be absolutely amazing if Noel McCalla sang this (the backing vocalist on this song and the lead vocalist on Rutherford's previous debut album, 'Smallcreep's Day'). Now that album is a masterpiece. It was released in early-1980, around the same time as Duke and as much as that is a great album, 'Smallcreep' would have been an even better Genesis record.
Rutherford is a truly great, albeit underrated musician who in my opinion had the best (in no way successful) solo career.

@tamcitron

I love this album, all over.

@jpr593

The bridge at 02:56 is crazy & tenebrous, emotional, comes from nowhere but adds a weird touch on this whole interesting track.

@saga55

yes I loooove this bridge!

@diegomorales8616

I had to look up tenebrous.
