Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

The prison band was there and they began to wail
The band was jumpin' and the joint began to swing
You should've heard those knocked out jailbirds sing
Let's rock
Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone
Little Joe was blowin' on the slide trombone
The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang
The whole rhythm section was a purple gang
Let's rock
Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Number 47 said to number 3
"You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see
I sure would be delighted with your company
Come on and do the Jailhouse Rock with me"
Let's rock
Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock, Rock, Rock
Sad Sack was sittin' on a block of stone
Way over in the corner weepin' all alone
The warden said, "Hey, buddy, don't you be no square
If you can't find a partner use a wooden chair"
Let's rock
Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Shifty Henry said to Bugs, "For Heaven's sake
No one's lookin', now's the chance to make a break"
Bugsy turned to Shifty and he said, "Nix nix
I wanna stick around a while and get my kicks"
Let's rock
Everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock, dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock, dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock, dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
The song "Jailhouse Rock" by Miranda Lambert is a cover of the classic rock and roll hit originally recorded by Elvis Presley. The lyrics depict a lively scene in a county jail where the warden has thrown a party. The prison band is playing, causing the energy in the jail to pick up. The "knocked out jailbirds" refer to the inmates who are thoroughly enjoying themselves and singing along to the music.
The first verse introduces the upbeat atmosphere as the band plays and the jailbirds start dancing to the "Jailhouse Rock." The mention of specific band members, such as Spider Murphy on the tenor saxophone and Little Joe on the slide trombone, adds to the vibrant imagery of the scene. The drumming by the boy from Illinois adds to the overall rhythm and excitement, making the whole rhythm section feel like a united group, described as a "purple gang."
In the second verse, one of the inmates, identified as "Number 47," notices another inmate, referred to as "Number 3," and compliments their appearance, calling them the "cutest jailbird." Number 47 expresses their desire to spend time together and invites Number 3 to join them in dancing to the Jailhouse Rock. This suggests that even in a confined and restricted environment like a jail, there can still be moments of joy and connection.
The third verse introduces a character named Sad Sack, who is sitting alone and feeling down. The warden encourages Sad Sack not to be lonely and advises them to find a partner to dance with. If finding a partner proves difficult, the warden suggests they use a wooden chair as a substitute, emphasizing the importance of finding a way to participate and enjoy the festivities.
The last verse features a conversation between Shifty Henry and Bugs, where Shifty suggests taking advantage of the lack of supervision to escape. However, Bugs rejects the idea and chooses to stay in jail for a while longer to seek pleasure and excitement. This highlights the irony that even in a place of confinement and punishment, individuals may still find pleasure and preferred ways of living.
Overall, "Jailhouse Rock" celebrates the power of music and dance to bring people together and lift spirits, even in unlikely settings such as a county jail. The lyrics highlight individual experiences within the jail, both positive and negative, showcasing the diversity of emotions and interactions that can occur in such an environment.
