Moby found commercial and critical success with his fifth album Play (1999), which, after receiving little recognition, became an unexpected global hit in 2000 after each track was licensed to films, television shows, and commercials. It remains his highest selling album with 12 million copies sold. Its seventh single, "South Side", featuring Gwen Stefani, remains his only one to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 14. Moby followed Play with albums of varied styles including electronic, dance, rock, and downtempo music, starting with 18 (2002), Hotel (2005), and Last Night (2008). His later albums saw him explore ambient music, including the almost four-hour release Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep. (2016). Moby continues to record and release albums; his twenty-first studio album, Resound NYC, was released in May 2023.
In addition to his music career, Moby is known for his veganism and support for animal rights and humanitarian aid. He was the owner of TeaNY, a vegan cafe in Manhattan, and Little Pine, a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, and organized the vegan music and food festival Circle V. He is the author of four books, including a collection of his photography and two memoirs: Porcelain: A Memoir (2016) and Then It Fell Apart (2019).

The Stars

Growing in speed
Can't fight the future
Can't fight what I see
People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
Efforts of lovers
Left in my mind
I sing in the reaches
We'll see what we find
People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
'Cause we are all made of stars
People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
'Cause we are all made of stars
Slow slow slow, come come
Someone come come come
Even love is goin' 'round
You can't ignore what is goin' 'round
Slowly rebuilding
I feel it in me
Growing in numbers
Growing in peace
People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
'Cause we are all made of stars
People they come together
People they fall apart
No one can stop us now
'Cause we are all made of stars
People they come together
(People they come together)
People they fall apart
(People they fall apart)
No one can stop us now
(No one can stop us now)
'Cause we are all made of stars
(We are all made of stars)
'Cause we are all made of stars
People they come together
'Cause we are all made of stars
(People they fall apart)
'Cause we are all made of stars
(No one can stop us now)
'Cause we are all made of stars
(We are all made of stars)
The lyrics to Moby's song "The Stars" are incredibly simple and repetitive, but they still manage to convey a sense of wonder and awe at the natural world. The first two lines of the song, "Get the beat in" and "I see the stars," seem to be linked in the sense that the beat that the singer is referring to is perhaps the rhythm of the stars themselves. The repetition of these lines throughout the song gives the impression of someone caught in a trance, hypnotized by the beauty of the night sky.
What's interesting about this song is that it seems to be almost entirely instrumental, with the lyrics serving more as a background chant than anything else. However, the simplicity of the lyrics only serves to highlight the driving beat and the ethereal quality of the music. In some ways, the song feels like a sonic representation of stargazing - the longer you listen, the more you become immersed in the music, until the outside world fades away and all you can see are the stars.
