Originally begun as a solo project, Modern Diet was the moniker under which Jake Cheriff wrote, recorded and released a three song EP in the summer of 2012. It didn’t take long for Modern Diet to evolve into an electric four-piece outfit after the current members all met at New York University that fall. The bands debut EP was released April 23rd, 2013. That spring saw a string of successful performances at NYC venues such as The Bitter End, Café Wha?, The Studio at Webster Hall, and many more. Modern Diet has continued to perform regularly in the New York City area and released their follow up EP, "Chemicals," on May 13, 2014. Modern Diet is college music redefined. The sound is intelligent yet accessible. Each song brings with it it’s own degree of room for improvisation with certain elements often remaining constant. Lyrically, much emphasis is placed on abstract story telling while musically the band draws on a wide range of influences.

Modern Diet Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
While I'm sucking on my thumb
Retro in a retroactive way
How could I have been so dumb
Look at the time
Nice not to meet you
Hello goodbye
Dizzy pours another drink for me
Maybe I can have one more
Between my straw and Dizzy's two front teeth
I'm already on the floor
Look at the time
Nice not to meet you
Hello goodbye
Nice not to meet you
Dizzy wants to smoke a cigarette
Won't I come distract the wind
So I watch her teeth and start to sweat
All this smoke is dizzying
The song "Dizzy" by Modern Diet is a lamentation of lost opportunities and regret expressed through the nights out with a friend called Dizzy. The lyrics describe Dizzy as carefree and destructive, living recklessly without regard for consequences. The singer, in contrast, is more introverted and reflective, sucking on thumb and observing Dizzy from afar. While Dizzy pours another drink and smokes a cigarette, the singer realizes how stupid he has been and how much he has missed out on, feeling nostalgic and disappointed that he was unable to make more of the moment.
The lyrics "Retro in a retroactive way, how could I have been so dumb" shed some light on the cause of the singer's regret. He may have neglected to seize the opportunity of those simpler days, missing out on realizing and enjoying the moment while it was still present. The chorus "Look at the time, Nice not to meet you, Hello goodbye, Nice not to meet you" gives the impression that the singer wants to move on and shake off the time spent with Dizzy and the other drunken moments spent partying, only to realize that it was all in vain. The song captures the dizzying feeling of lost time and missed opportunities that often come with nostalgia.
