Do You Ever Remember?
Molly Drake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you ever remember?
Now you are so far away
Things that we used to laugh about
Crazy things we'd say
There were so many May times
When every word was a song
There were so many gay times
Before it all went all so wrong

But time is ever a vagabond
Time was always a thief
Time can steal away happiness
But time can take away grief
So I won't try to remember
For that way leads to regret
Though I will try to remember
What I can never forget

Overall Meaning

The song "Do You Ever Remember?" by Molly Drake appears to be a reflective look at the past and the memories that remain. The opening line sets the tone for the rest of the song as a lament for a lost connection: "Do you ever remember? Now you are so far away." The distance between the singer and someone else (perhaps a lover or a friend) seems to make it difficult to recall the "things that we used to laugh about" and the "crazy things we'd say" in the past.

However, the singer doesn't seem completely resigned to forgetting the past. They acknowledge the happy times they shared in the form of "May times" when "every word was a song." This nostalgia for past joy is tempered by the realization that "before it all went all so wrong," something changed. From this point on, the lyrics take a more philosophical turn. Time, described as a "vagabond" and a "thief," is given power over human experience. The final lines of the song acknowledge that remembering the past can lead to regret, but there is still something to be gained from holding on to certain memories.

Overall, "Do You Ever Remember?" is a wistful reflection on the past that grapples with the nature of time and memory. Though it appears to be a melancholy song, it also contains a kernel of hope. However difficult it might be to recall certain details or experiences, the singer recognizes that some aspects of the past will never be forgotten.

I think the last line is "No I won't try". It clearly sounds like a "no" to me. Plus, that seems to be what the song is about. She isn't going to try to remember. She doesn't need to try because it is impossible for her to forget.
