Square Circles
Moon Taxi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He just wore his wicked good, clearly you're misunderstood like pagans in the house of God
And I am just an honest thief I believe in disbelief, you wait to even out the odds
Try it on, one size fits all clear as mud and urban scrawl listen to the still winds blow
Alone together, take your seat for the tragic comedy
Nobody tells me less is more
Going nowhere, recreating once again, you hurry up and wait for painful pleasures always ending once again you hurry up and wait for...
And wait for... and wait for... and wait for...
Like love bite, two wrongs might make it right double negative in this city only death lives
Psychoanalytic mystic losing myself I'm searching for the truth but I'm losing my wealth
Gaining momentum, then I'm back again Got this demon as my friend beginning's wedged in the end
Give and take, for God's sake I might break, Have my cake and eat it too, have cake, have truth
Choose for Jesus, On this box, broken pieces, poison arrows Tell the Pharaoh I'll be gone by tomorrow, to quench my thirst
In the desert, Flirt with death might be my best move yet, I'm running with ease I'm feeling free in slavery, in these clouds I can see Chopped down to my knees I'm crossing high above my needs cut the corners, I bleed these evil decrees, my heart it bleeds
Sanity's insane, who's driving that train Sweet pain going straight to my vein sun shower, warm rains

And I'm dry again, and I'm dry again
And I'll raise him up living in square circles and I'll raise him up living in square circles and I'll raise him up living in square circles and I'll raise him up living in square circles and I'll raise him up and I'll raise him up and I'll raise him up and I'll raise him up

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Moon Taxi's "Square Circles" are poetic and thought-provoking. The song seems to depict the confusion and contradictions that come with living in a modern urban society. The opening lines describe a person who is misunderstood and seen as wicked even though they might just be a misfit. The following lines talk about belief and disbelief coexisting in the same space, leading to confusion and chaos. The chorus talks about being stuck in a rut, always trying to recreate something that has already ended, leading to waiting for things to change but getting stuck in a painful cycle.

As the song progresses, the lyrics reflect the idea of contradictory ideas and the search for the truth. The lines mention how taking two negative steps might lead to a positive outcome, while also hinting at the idea of losing oneself while trying to find the truth. Additionally, the verses talk about the struggle to balance one's desires while also acknowledging the consequences of those choices. Towards the end, the lines reflect on the idea of being trapped in the turmoil of modern society while trying to raise oneself and others above it all.

Overall, the song's lyrics paint a picture of a world where contradictions are prevalent, leading to confusion and chaos. The song's title, "Square Circles," reflects this confusion of conflicting ideas that seem impossible to reconcile.

I wish elementary would come out with a soundtrack of all the songs they put in their episodes. It's amazing!

I've been a huge Moon Taxi fan for several years. It is great exposure for a young band to get one of their songs on a popular TV show in a primo time slot. So, however you discover a fantastic band, song, movie, or tv show, it's a process and it's all good. Now, I'm an Elementary fan as well. Plus, it's not cool to be a jerk.
