Formed in 1983 … Read Full Bio ↴Moral Crux are a punk band from Ephrata, Washington.
Formed in 1983 by James Farris and Jeff Jenkins, the remaining original members. Jarred Brown plays guitar and Lee Lester drums.
They cite influences from classic bands like The Clash, Ramones, Generation X, Lou Reed, New York Dolls, The Damned, Wayne County and the Electric Chairs, Circle Jerks, and TSOL, among others.
The following is an excerpt of a Moral Crux concert review from Flipside magazine:
"Politically charged, severely (almost criminally) underrated, I suspect they'd have a much more receptive audience touring with the likes of the Queers, but I enjoyed the set quite a bit. The lead singer's the visual centerpiece, jumping, creeping, swinging around. ... What I also noticed was the bassist was phenomenal, transforming a rather simple rhythm section into a fell webbing of sound that was fuller and more satisfying than ass-simple pop-punk."

Every fucking week
Another no talent lame brain
Trendy and so meek
You ain't cool, you ain't hip
You're not out of sight
Just another sycophant
Victim of hype
Could you do without an advert that
Tells you what to wear
Or a top ten billboard chart
To define your musical taste
You ain't cool, you ain't hip
You're not out of sight
Just another sycophant
Victim of hype
Victim of hype
You're just a victim of hype
In Moral Crux's song "Victim of Hype," the lyrics criticize the music industry's obsession with constantly promoting new, trendy artists who have no talent or originality. The singer expresses frustration with the fact that each week there seems to be a new no-name on the charts, and that the public is being fed these artist's music through advertisements and top 10 lists. The lyrics suggest that these artists are not cool or hip, but are merely sycophants - people who are only interested in gaining favor or advantages by flattering those in authority.
The song is a commentary on the nature of fame and success in the music industry, as well as a criticism of consumer culture and the media's influence on people's taste. The lyrics suggest that people should strive to form their own opinions about music, rather than being told what to like or how to dress by advertisements and charts. The repeated refrain of "Victim of Hype" implies that many people are caught up in this cycle of hype and are not able to see through the marketing tactics used to sell music.
Overall, "Victim of Hype" is a powerful critique of the music industry's reliance on marketing and trend-following, and encourages listeners to think for themselves rather than being swayed by mass media campaigns.
