Broken Skin
Mortiis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Does it bother you did it not obey you?
Does it anger you did it not please you?

Does it bother you did it not consider you?
Is it killing you did it not care for you?

(I pray) these sores will never heal
Come touch with broken skin
I pray these wounds will never hurt
Come touch this broken skin

Did you want to pull the strings?
Become the master of all things?
And punish this my gravest sin
Bitter enemy of this my broken skin

You can never let this go
Your superficial mind torments you so
Bow down admit defeat
Old weak and obsolete

(I pray) these sores will never heal
Come touch with broken skin
I pray these wounds will never hurt
Come touch this broken skin

Gone too far I've gone too far is this me?

I am not me am I somebody else?
I am not me I want to be myself

Overall Meaning

The first two stanzas of "Broken Skin" by Mortiis featuring Stephan Groth speak of a relationship that has gone awry, where one party has felt as though they haven't been obeyed or pleased, and the other party never gave consideration or care. The singer, Mortiis, then prays that the sores and wounds inflicted upon him will never heal, and invites the person who created them to touch his broken skin, potentially as an act of seduction. The following stanzas suggest that the power dynamic has shifted, and the person who once held control now regrets their actions and is tormented by their superficial mind. The singer urges the other to bow down, admit defeat, and accept their own obsolescence.

It is possible that the song can be interpreted as being about an abusive relationship, where one person holds power and control over the other, and the victim ultimately learns to reclaim their own sense of self. It can be seen as a statement against toxic and parasitic relationships, where one person seeks to control their partner at any cost. The refrain "Come touch this broken skin" could also be interpreted as a plea for empathy and understanding, a desire to be seen and recognized for who they truly are.
