Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

I Know How to Die
Motörhead Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
save me from the killing floor.
Outta time outta sight,
creeping up on you tonight.
Can't see your face no more, hanging in the sky.
It might be gone forever and that's a long long time.
If I could find the cure I wouldn't have to cry,
Thousand years lost in time,
outta shape and outta line.
Flying high you know it's true,
searching all the world for you.
Take the wild ride, teach you how to fly,
Be on my side hate them long goodbyes.
Don't believe in miracles and I won't even try,
I know the law,I know how to die.
No more lies no excuse,
walk a mile in my shoes.
Outta luck out on bail,
run like hell stay out of jail.
Can't see the way no more needles in my eyes,
Rotten to the core hang me out to dry.
Give me satisfaction or a damn good reason why,
Cross your heart and hope to die.
Stay on the right track;
you can't live a lie,
Make sure you don't go back,
look me in the eye,
Know I ain't no angel, broken wings don't fly,
I know the law, I know how to die
The song "I Know How To Die" by Motörhead, released in 2010, is an adrenaline-fueled track that speaks to the band's ethos of living hard and dying young. The lyrics touch upon themes of love, fate, mortality, and the journey of life, making it one of their most introspective and melancholic songs. Lemmy Kilmister's signature gravelly voice delivers an ominous warning that he knows what's coming and is unafraid of meeting his fate, even if it means meeting it early.
The first verse talks about Lemmy's willingness to do anything for the one he loves. He is ready to be saved from the "killing floor" if only they say the word. The second verse talks about how time is running out, and he can't see the face of his loved one anymore. However, he is not bothered by it, as he knows it might be gone forever. The chorus suggests that if there was a cure for death, he wouldn't have to cry, as he knows the law, and he knows how to die. The third verse deals with how futile it is to try and find someone across different times and places, but Lemmy is still willing to take the wild ride and teach them how to fly. The fourth verse is a warning to his enemies to not try anything funny, as he can see through their lies and can take them out. The song ends with a call to stay on the right track and not live a lie, as Lemmy knows how to live and how to die.
