Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

KEYS TO THE KINGDOM
Motörhead Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Came to the mission, couldn't get in,
Came out of nowhere, guess I'll go back,
All down to bad luck,
Fire in the sky, nowhere to run,
Came to the desert, burned by the sun,
Came out of somewhere, I ain't never been back,
All down to bad luck,
King of frustration, vampire deluxe,
Keys to the kingdom, god hates your guts,
Out of the heavens a blessing might fall,
But the keys to the kingdom mean nothing at all,
Crippled by cold, blinded by fear,
Looking for god, but they said he ain't here,
Came out of nowhere, can't stand to go back,
All down to bad luck,
Carved on a stone, the world's epitaph,
Walked through the graveyard, just had to laugh,
Came out of exile, for a handful of dust,
All down to bad luck,
King aggravation, vampire deluxe,
Congratulations, god hates your guts,
Bound for damnation, backs to the wall,
And the keys to the kingdom mean nothing at all,
High in the sky, in letters of fire,
The names of the saints,
The thieves and the liars,
Came to the funeral, out of pure spite,
All down to bad luck,
The least we could do, the harder we tried,
The better we lived, the sooner we died,
Came to the goldmine, cold and alone,
All down to bad luck,
King of starvation, vampire deluxe,
Keys to the kingdom, we hate your guts,
In the asylum, no one hears you call,
And the keys to the kingdom mean nothing at all,
Nothing at all
The lyrics to Motörhead's song "Keys to the Kingdom" suggest a sense of hopelessness and despair, as the singer describes being unable to find success or salvation, no matter where they go or what they do. The motifs of death, fire, and blindness are repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the theme of futility that pervades the lyrics.
The singer seems to be searching for meaning or purpose in their life, but is continually thwarted by bad luck, frustration, and the unsympathetic nature of the universe. Even the keys to the kingdom, which might represent power, knowledge, or enlightenment, are portrayed as ultimately meaningless or useless. The song ends on a particularly bleak note, with the repeated assertion that the keys to the kingdom "mean nothing at all."
Overall, "Keys to the Kingdom" can be seen as a reflection of the human condition, in which people struggle to find meaning or purpose in a world that often seems uncaring and hostile. The song suggests that our efforts may be ultimately futile, and that we are all subject to the whims of luck and fate.
