Motörhead released 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs over a career spanning 40 years. Usually a power trio, they had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top 40 chart. The albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades and, particularly, the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's reputation as a top-tier rock band. The band are ranked number 26 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. As of 2016, they have sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
Most often classified as heavy metal, Motörhead has been credited with being part of and influencing numerous musical scenes, thrash metal and speed metal especially. Lemmy, however, always insisted that they were a rock and roll band. He said that they had more in common with punk bands, but with their own unique sound, Motörhead is embraced in both punk and metal scenes. Their lyrics typically covered such topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse and, most famously, gambling, the latter theme being the focus of their hit song "Ace of Spades".
Lemmy died on 28 December 2015 from cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The day after his death, drummer Mikkey Dee and guitarist Phil Campbell both confirmed that Motörhead had disbanded. By 2018, all three members of Motörhead's best-known line-up (Lemmy, Taylor and Clarke) had died.

You will be alright if you can change
You can be a rich man, you can start to climb.
Get into the rhythm, step into the line.
Politicians eat your words
Prohibition that's a joke
Exhibition of the criminally insane
You can take the money,
but can you take the blame
You can take the money,
but can you take the blame
You can be the new arising star
You can be the super new-wave boy
You can be a tyrant, you can rule by fear
That's the way they like it, stick it in their ear
Politicians eat your words
Prohibition that's a joke
Put your own children in Jail with a shame
You can take the money,
but can you take the blame
You can take the money,
but can you take the blame
Politician swine, you make me wanna puke
Waste my money, waste my time.
going by the book
Education fails no need to teach the poor
They just get in the way, until we have a war.
until we have a war
You will never sorrow for your friends
You will never miss them for a day
You will be a hero, you will be a king
Get into the money, get into the swing
Politicians eat your words
Prohibition that's a joke
You can't fool everybody, you should be ashamed
You can take the money,
but can you take the blame
You can take the money,
but can you take the blame
See you on TV, you talk and talk and talk
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
Liars, thieves and dorks
You may be in control,
so how come you're so scared
Is it because you feel, the hatred everywhere,
the hatred everywhere
The lyrics of Motörhead's song "Take The Blame" are a scathing critique of societal and political corruption. The opening lines "You can see the way we do it here, you will be alright if you can change" suggest that there is a certain way of doing things, corrupt as it may be, that one can survive in if they are willing to adapt. The song then goes on to describe the various roles one can take on to climb to the top of this corrupt society, whether it be a rich man, a new rising star, or a tyrant ruling by fear.
The verses also touch on the failures of politics and prohibition, describing politicians as liars and thieves and questioning the efficacy of laws and systems designed to prevent crime. The chorus emphasizes the central theme of the song: while one can take the money and climb to the top, the true test of power is whether or not one can take responsibility for their actions and the consequences that come with them.
The final verse directly confronts those in power, accusing them of being afraid of the hatred that they sow through their corruption and greed. In total, "Take The Blame" is a powerful song that calls for accountability and honesty in a world that often lacks both.
