Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mountain Man's song "Babylon" are deeply emotional and profound. The first line, "by the floods, the floods of Babylon," seems to evoke images of destruction and devastation. This could be interpreted as a reference to the biblical story of the Babylonian captivity, when the people of Judah were exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian Empire.

The next two lines, "we sat down and wept, and wept for thee Zion," further emphasize the profound sadness of the situation. Zion is a reference to Jerusalem, which was the center of Jewish religious and cultural life at the time. The line "we remember, we remember, we remember thee Zion" serves as a reminder of the people's connection to their homeland, despite being forced to leave it.

Pero, ¿por qué habláis de cosas tan extrañas?. Es una canción que entra dentro de la tradición europea medieval. Y, por cierto, con muy bellas voces.

this song should've been in Moonrise Kingdom.

My son is 3 now, I play him this and sing to him at bedtime. Zion is a name for utopia, the promised land, or heaven on earth. Babylon being those in control of our world and the system that makes it hard for us to achieve Zion state as a whole, for all of humanity. Thats what I ment in my prior comment below,. Not a biblical point of view as much as just an era of peace love and equality for all. Which isnt exactly what this psalm is talking about, but I do love the harmonies and my son Zion loves to hear his name sung in such harmony and see the beautiful women. Beautiful in a soul sense, not just physically. It is beautiful to watch and hear this

Is it just me or does this melody and the way it interacts with itself remind anyone of the melody and chords of Dido's Lament?
