Travelogue
Mr. Scruff Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mr Ed
Miscellaneous
Mr Ed
A horse is a horse
Of course of course
And no one can talk to a horse,
Of course
That is, of course
Unless the horse
Is the famous Mister Ed!

Go right to the source
And ask the horse
He′ll give you the answer that you'll endorse
He′s always on a steady course
Talk to Mister Ed!

People yakkity-yak a streak
And waste your time of day
But Mister Ed will never speak
Unless he has something to say!

Oh, a horse is a horse
Of course, of course
And this one'll talk 'til his voice is hoarse
You never heard of a talking horse?

Well, listen to this:
". . . I am Mister Ed!"

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Mr. Scruff's song "Travelogue" are not original to him, but are a reference to the theme song of the classic television show "Mr. Ed." The lines tell us that a horse is ordinarily incapable of communication with humans, except in the case of the eponymous Mr. Ed, who is "famous" for his ability to talk. The following lines ask us to "go right to the source" and "ask the horse" if we have any questions, suggesting that Mr. Ed is a reliable and trustworthy source of information. Interestingly, these lines could also be interpreted as a call to bypass human intermediaries and go straight to the things themselves when seeking knowledge, which would be consistent with the theme of exploration that runs throughout the rest of the song.
