Long Way Out
Mr. Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby I, used to like the way you smiled
Lovely-eyed just like a child
But baby now you're gone, I don't really care no more
And baby you
(Baby you, yea)
You used to give me all your time
(All of your time, yea)
Well you wasted yours and wasted mine
(Baby you wasted)
Baby now you're gone, I don't know what time it is
It's taken me way too long
It's taken me way too long
(You know it's true, yea)
It's taken me way too long
(Ba dah bah, dah dah dah)
It's taken me way too long
I, I hate to see you down and out
You're rolling out like a storm that stayed too long
And baby now you're gone, summer's going on and on
(I guess what I'm trying to say is, goodbye)
It's taken me way too long
Oh to get out what I needed
It's taken me way too long
Girl to catch up with the real you
It's taken me way too long
Baby to say what I need to
It's taken me way too long
Ah yea
Way too long
Oh hoo yea, oh hoo yea
Oh hoo yea, oh hoo yea
It's taken me way too long
It's taken me way too long
(Took some time now - Babe it feels good to say)
It's taken me way too long
(It feels so good to say now, yea)
It's taken me way too long
(Yea)
It's taken me Way Too Long
It's taken me Way Too Long
It's taken me Way Too Long

It's taken me Way Too Long
It's taken me Way Too Long

Overall Meaning

In "Long Way Out" by Mr. Smith, the lyrics convey a sense of detachment and indifference towards a past relationship. The first verse begins with reminiscing about the pleasant qualities that initially attracted the singer to their partner. They were captivated by their charming smile and youthful innocence. However, as time passed, the partner's absence no longer affects the singer emotionally. They declare that they no longer care and have moved on.

The chorus emphasizes the time wasted in the relationship. The singer reflects on how their partner used to dedicate all their time to them, but in the end, both parties wasted their time. The repetition of "baby now you're gone" suggests that the partner's departure has led to a sense of liberation for the singer. They acknowledge that it took them too long to realize this truth, possibly indicating that the relationship had been deteriorating for some time.

The second verse highlights the singer's uncertainty about the passing of time. They express frustration and impatience, admitting that it has taken them far too long to realize what they truly needed. The mention of the "real you" suggests that the partner's true nature or intentions were not initially apparent. The singer has been slow in acknowledging this reality, probably clouded by their own emotions and attachment.

As the song progresses, the repetition of "it's taken me way too long" reinforces the theme of regret and the belated recognition of the situation. There is a mix of relief and an affirmation of finally expressing what needed to be said. The repetition of these lines towards the end signifies the release of pent-up emotions, as if the singer has finally found the courage to speak their truth.

Overall, "Long Way Out" delves into the aftermath of a faded relationship, highlighting the singer's realization of wasted time and missed opportunities. The lyrics express a sense of detachment, indifference, and relief after the partner's departure, suggesting personal growth and a newfound understanding of their own needs.

As a fan of the OG film, I kinda like this new take on it. Having them work cohesively together instead of like trying to kill each other is a nice change of pace. Definitely gonna be on the look out for this.

@acurry722

There might be a ending twist, like the original.

@Mrsamj1988

I mean it’s Donald glover. Can’t go wrong with him.

@unadanni

It's not a new take. It's based on the premise of the original series, the plot of which the film bastardized. Crazy how the bastardized version of this story is seen as the "real" one amongst people nowadays.

@jackchop1576

the 2005 version was a reboot too.

@GingyReacts

@@jackchop1576 that’s actually crazy. Was the original the one done by Hitchcock? I just looked it up and that was the only one I saw

I’m a big fan of Donald Glover, his originality and creativity are top shelf. In his own words he’s said some people are going to hate this project and some are going to love it as long as you feel something. I respect the heck out of that. I think by now it can be said that this series is nothing like the 2005 film and dare I say as someone who’s been married for over eighteen years the little peak into these characters relationship are a lot more relatable to everyday people in 2023 which he said he is going for.

@thehater6189

Iunno. I always thought he was mid at everything he does. However, he is mid at a lot of things so it's still impressive. My gripe with this show is exactly why you find it interesting in that it is relatable and it really shouldnt be. It should be extraordinary given its premise

@trackboy17

The couples therapy was the most hilarious part of the movie I hope they capture that.

@chibanni14

This pairing doesn’t even work as coworkers let alone fake spouses. No one in their right mind would believe she is attracted to him, let alone married to him. Pretty dumb matchup
