I Want to Be Loved
Muddy Water Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The spark in your eye sets my soul on fire
Your voice is like a angel's above
The touch of your hand drives me insane
But baby, I want's to be loved

I'm crazy 'bout every little, thing you do
I cherish the way you hug
Your kisses so sweet, they just can't be beat
But baby, I want's to be loved

Every time I ask ya, for a date
You don't come at all or you mighty late
I ask you to dance, a little spin
You said "wait a minute, daddy, here come my friend"

I like the way you walk when you passin' by
Even when you tryin' to snub
You kill me every time you give me the eye
But baby, I want's to be loved

Every time I ask ya, for a date
You don't come at all or you mighty late
I ask you to dance, a little spin
You said "wait a minute, daddy, here come my friend"

I like the way you walk when you passin' by
Even when you tryin' to snub

You kill me every time you give me the eye
But baby, I want's to be loved

Overall Meaning

The song "I Want to Be Loved" by Muddy Waters is a classic blues tune about a man desperate for the love and attention of a woman who seems to be playing hard to get. From the very beginning of the song we can hear the passion in the singer's voice as he describes how just the sight of the woman he desires sets his soul on fire. He goes on to compliment her voice, comparing it to that of an angel's, and to express how just the touch of her hand makes him insane with desire. However, despite all of these fiery passions he has for her, what he ultimately desires above all is simply to be loved.

Throughout the song, the singer describes his frustration at the woman's seemingly lack of interest in him. He tries to schedule dates with her only to be stood up or have her show up incredibly late. Even when he tries to dance with her, she dismisses him and goes off with her friends. Despite this, the singer can't help but admire the woman, even when she's being distant, and he expresses that he wants nothing more than for her to feel the same way about him as he does about her.

The song is a classic example of the blues style, expressing the raw emotions and passions of the singer through powerful lyrics and vocals. It's a timeless tale of unrequited love and desire that still resonates with listeners today.

Willie is the best drummer that I ever saw and one of the nicest guys ever.  RIP Willie, Pine, and Muddy.  Willie's drumming on Walkin Thru the Park on Johnny Winter's Nothin But the Blues album is incredible.   And if you haven't seen them, check out the live shows from this tour from Boston and Philly that are on youtube

A favorite of mine, never heard Muddy and this album till 2007 and things changed inside. Cotton's harp on this blows the doors off. I'd like to see/hear Taylor Hicks play this as a rough duet. But I believe I need some divine intervention to pull this off. Big Boss Man is another for this guy, the Beacon, in nyc. I couldn't believe what I was hearing it was like someone tucked a diamond under my pillow. 😊

I also, have always favoured this special cover...some real mojo, workin'!
During my high school days, this album was released. These Winterized, Grammy gems, became my real introduction to the music of the legend, I also share a birthday with. Cotton guested on Johnny's stage at the 25th Chicago Blues Festival, in 2008. Bob Margolin & Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, both on this recording, also appeared at the fest, paying tribute to their old boss.

There's a bit of this song in the movie R.E.D with Bruce Willis and bunch of other big names. Watched it on demand tonight and had to go hear the entire song. There's other bits of good songs in it too. They use it when they transfer to another city in the movie.

I bought the "Hard Again" album in 1977/78. It was my first hard core blues album and it had such a big influence in my taste in music. This song is my favorite cut.
