Well the blues had a baby and they named the baby Rock & Roll

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Muddy Waters's song The Blues Had A Baby And They Named It Rock And Roll are a tribute to the powerful influence of blues music on the birth of rock and roll. The lyrics suggest that rock and roll is both the offspring and the evolution of the blues. The opening lyrics, "All you people, you know the blues got a soul / Well this is a story, a story never been told," invite the listener to contemplate the origins of rock and roll and how it emerged from the blues.

The lyrics then continue, "Well you know the blues got pregnant / And they named the baby Rock & Roll," comparing the evolution of the blues to a pregnancy that gave birth to a new genre of music. The chorus reinforces this idea, with references to other influential musicians who acknowledge the blues as the foundation of their own sound. These artists include Muddy Waters himself, James Brown, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Otis Redding, and even Queen Victoria.

The song is a reminder that rock and roll owes a great debt to the blues, which has served as the foundation of so many different types of music. It also suggests that the blues is a living tradition, one that continues to inspire and evolve as new generations of artists continue to explore its rich history and legacy.

When I was in college in the early 80"s i let some friends of mine that were musicians listen to this tape and they would not give it back ! Those guys were really good but Muddy blew those guys away! Long live the blues

I remember hearing this being played around the house when I was a boy, and not understanding the appeal of it. Going on 40 years later, having become a music lover, being a singer/guitar-player, I can say I "get it".
