I Will Wait
Mumford & Sons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I came home
Like a stone
And I fell heavy into your arms
These days of dust
Which we've known
Will blow away with this new sun

But I'll kneel down
Wait for now
And I'll kneel down
Know my ground

And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you

So break my step
And relent
You forgave and I won't forget
Know what we've seen
And him with less
Now in some way
Shake the excess

'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you

Now I'll be bold
As well as strong
And use my head alongside my heart
So take my flesh
And fix my eyes
A tethered mind free from the lies

And I'll kneel down
Wait for now
I'll kneel down
Know my ground, woo

Raise my hands
Paint my spirit gold
And bow my head
Keep my heart slow

'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you

And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you

Overall Meaning

The song "I Will Wait" by Mumford & Sons speaks of the commitment and devotion that one person has towards another. The opening line "Well I came home, like a stone," sets the tone for the song as one of vulnerability and heaviness. The singer has returned home and feels the weight of the world on his shoulders. But as he falls into the arms of his loved one, he feels comforted and safe.

The next set of lyrics, "These days of dust, which we've known, will blow away with this new sun," suggest that the trials and difficulties that they have gone through will soon pass. The singer then says that he will "kneel down, wait for now, and know his ground." This is a symbolic gesture of humility and surrender. He is willing to be patient and grounded while waiting for his loved one, and will not waver in his devotion.

The chorus of the song repeats the message that he will wait for his loved one. He is fully committed and will not give up. The last set of lyrics, "Raise my hands, paint my spirit gold, and bow my head, keep my heart slow," is a nod towards the spiritual and emotional growth that he has gone through. He has found a sense of peace and contentment within himself, and will continue to wait for his loved one.

Overall, the song is a beautiful declaration of love, patience, and devotion. It encourages listeners to be steadfast in their commitment towards those they love, even during times of turmoil and uncertainty.

When I listen to this song, my heart aches.
My Beloved Baby Brother died 1/4/2020.
He was a Soldier, a career Army man.
He died when he was only 47 years old.
Jamie was deployed 3 times.
Twice to Iraq and once, the last time, to Afghanistan.
He was a Combat Engineer who cleared explosives, IED'S, Landmines etc. Think the movie, "The Hurt Locker".
He was Awarded the Army Metal with Valor, multiple Purple Hearts, and many others.
When I heard this song, I thought of my brother.
After reading others comments, I see how other people relate to this song in so many different ways.
As for me, I thought about when my brother was deployed to Iraq for the first time.
He left behind his wife Anita, a Special Needs Teacher & their two little boys who were only 3 & 5 years old.
The 1st time he was Deployed, we weren't allowed to see him off.
So, the day he was deploy to Iraq, one of the soldiers came to his home & picked him up.
He, his wife and 2 little boys stood on the front porch and said their tearful goodbye's.
It was late October in New England, & it was cold outside.
Well after the truck had driven out of sight, Anita went to bring the boys inside.
Connor, who was 5yo went in the house.
Ryan who was only 3yo, wouldn't go in.
Anita knelt down to ask him why he didn't go inside.
With a serious, thoughtful expression in his big brown eyes and tear stained face.
He looked up at his Mom & said, "I'm going to stay right here and wait for Dad to come home."
Gently, Anita said, "Ryan, remember Dad talked about how he was going to be away with his Army Family for a while, then he'll come home?"
"We made the calender with Dad, to mark off the days till he comes home."
In his serious 3 year old "grown up voice", he said, "Yes, but I'm still going to stay right here and wait for Dad to come home."
"Dad will see me & he won't forget where we live!".
Talk about heartbreaking! Military Spouses don't get the recognition they deserve!!
Neither does the less than 1% of the eligible US population that serve in the Military!!
At night, I look up at the stars and I talk to my brother!
Sometimes I text him, or I'll call & sing him "Happy Birthday" or just to chat.
It's been 2 years now and Miraculously, even though the phone is not registered or hooked up, my texts and calls still go thru!!
I like to think my brother makes it happen!!
