Brother
Murder By Death Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fourteen years have passed since that day
Your stories are the same but the ends have all changed
You carried on like you were some type of god
Some things will never change

We went home to see our folks
We laughed and we told jokes
It was like we were young again
On that deathbed our mother lay
How long she's got they still can't say
Took all this to get us back together again

How long is this gonna last?
You can't keep reliving your past
Screwing over the ones that you love
In the name of some new drug
So brother, raise another pint
Rev up the engine and drive off in the night
See you somewhere some place some time
I know there's better brothers
But you're the only one that's mine
I know there's better brothers
But you're the only one that's mine

The bondsman came to my door
Early the next day, he said
"I come lookin' for your brother
You don't know what kind of trouble that he's in"

How long is this gonna last?
You can't keep reliving your past
Johnny Law keeps a poundin' at my door
'Cause you screwed up some new score

So he's standing in the doorway
Like he owns the place
With a look of smug satisfaction on his face
I'm gonna give you up
Of that he's sure as hell
But I take one look at him
And I know I'll never tell

So brother, raise another pint
Rev up the engine and drive off in the night
See you somewhere some place some time
I know there's better brothers
But you're the only one that's mine

So brother, raise another pint
Rev up the engine and drive off in the night
I still look out for you no matter what you heard
They can knock all of my doors down
But I won't say a word
They can knock all of my doors down
But I won't say a word

Fourteen years have passed

Since that day
But still nothing has changed

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Murder by Death's song "Brother" tell the story of two estranged brothers who reconnect after years apart due to their mother's illness, and the tumultuous events that follow. The first verse sets the tone of the song by highlighting the fact that despite the passage of time, some things never change, such as one brother's tendency to act like he is above everyone else. The chorus then asks the question of how long their reunion will last, and if the brother who caused trouble and strife in the past will continue to let his drug use and selfishness get in the way.

The second verse adds an urgency to their reunion, as the bondsman comes knocking on the door looking for the drug-addicted brother who has gotten into trouble. As the brothers confront each other, one brother pledges loyalty to the other to the point where he's willing to take the fall for him. The song ends by reiterating the fact that time has passed but nothing has changed, capturing the bittersweet nature of the reunion.

Overall, the lyrics of this song touch on the themes of family, loyalty, and the consequences of one's actions. The relationship between the two brothers is filled with tension and resentment, yet it's clear that they still care for each other in their own way.

So... (*inhale -Deep Breathes) This band has been my favorite band in Last 20 years... My friend Johnny turned me on to them. who was my brother's drummer.Their music had own original flavor with story telling design behind each song. Fell in love instantly to "Sara's" Chloe . To this she will always rock my world with it like when i was teenage boy who saw his first crush.. Well im asking for celebration... I remember when this whole Album came out "Boca Al Lupa". (-into the wolf's mouth,' a way to wish someone 'good luck.) My brother came in and showed me this song for the introduction of this band. And this song was ours. 20 years now he is dead. Didn't change the habits and the life style,,,
Whelp hear it goes family. Finally listening to sense he has passed... Nearly 80 days ago... Finally picking my ass up going to sober living. "Wish my well upon my way... And carry me home..." <3

@tinaoom

This is one of the best songs of all time, in my opinion.
