@@chezmoi42 This is true. It's not a responsibility I'd be happy to accept. I live in France and spend a lot of time photographing mushrooms. I am yet to go out and not find a species I've not seen before. The other difficulty lay in how much they change in their short lives. With around 3000 different types in France alone, the best you can hope for is a knowledge of the ones most common to your area.

yes, which is why picking mushrooms to eat is not a good idea. if you really want to learn, it takes some effort but you can meet up with a local mycological society and people there will help you. But nothing is going to replace researching the subject yourself first. As far as california goes, you avoid any normal looking mushroom or anything that is small and orange/brown. That weeds out the three deadly mushrooms. There are still plenty others that will cause you to become violently sick, but most of those taste horrible anyway.

Mushrooms like Chanterelles and boletes are easy to identify and there isn't too much of a danger from mistaking those for something toxic.

@@snicker576 When foraging for mushrooms, it's important not only to be able identify edible ones, but to be keenly aware of hazardous lookalikes. Some mushrooms are much more beginner friendly than others, having either very distinctive identifiable features, or no toxic lookalikes. Oyster mushrooms, for instance, are incredibly easy to identify and so can be safely harvested by novice foragers with little cause for concern. On the other hand, anything even remotely resembling something like a death cap should be left well alone, even for experienced mushroom pickers. While there are some edible, tasty mushrooms that can look similar death caps, destroying angels, etc., even the most experienced and educated mushroom pickers will usually leave them be because they simply aren't worth the risk, no matter how confident they are with their ID. Even puffball mushrooms — a delicious species widley considered to be one of the easiest to identify — can sometimes be confused with young destroying angels (a similarly toxic relative to the death cap), and should always be cut open to confirm their ID before consumption. I'm curious as to how experienced the lady featured in this video actually is, because identifying — and knowing not to pick anything that resembles — amanitas (the family to which death caps belong) is very much required knowledge to anyone even thinking about foraging for edible mushrooms.

I found what were later identified as 'Destroying Angel' mushrooms on a local hiking trail. They are almost as toxic as Death Caps. Kind of unsettling when you find such toxic plants in your familiar stomping grounds.

Fungi are in an entirely separate category from plants, being taxonomically slightly closer to animals. It’s easy to assume that they’re plants, though - ferns also reproduce through spores instead of seeds.

You'd be very surprised at what's around you that's toxic or poisonous. They've been there forever. It's really no big deal unless you forage or have a kid that puts whatever's growing in their mouths or animal without the self preservation instinct.

The first thing you should do when foraging is find all the poisonous look alikes, and put some time into it. I don't know how many times I've read something had no toxic look alikes or is easy to distinguish just to find out later that it wasn't the case.

Most plants have some kind of a forgiveness period, but not mushrooms. Apparently almost all mushrooms are not severely toxic but the ones that are make up for all the rest. Whereas plants have many toxic members but not many as sneaky and deadly as the few deadly mushrooms.

as was already pointed out, mushrooms are no plants. funnily enough, plants can be even more dangerous as mushrooms. every mushroom, even death caps, can be touched and licked without harm. but there are some poisonous plants that cannot be touched. the toxicity of wild plants often gets underestimated, while the dangers of mushrooms are painted in the scariest shades... it's like everything else: you have to know what you're doing. if you don't, you should not do it.

it was literally one of the first things I learned about mushrooms here in germany: If it has that white ball on the stem, don't eat it. These types of mushrooms are called "Knollenblätterpilze" in german. If the green cap wasn't indicator enough we also got white ones that somehow look like big champignons except for the ball.

It is not the lookalike, color or anything by the look. It is the ground they grow, same mushroom at other place is not toxic. Same mushroom I can re-grow it in sacks, after 3-4 generations is not toxic and to not be poisonous any more, but once placed on wrong lands, it takes ground toxins again. Actually any mushroom on toxic land will be poisonous. Most poisons are from meteors or asteroids, and all plants there contain the toxins in, including any water near. Most toxins are removed with long cooking with many hours the soil, but expert should do that as breathing the air can cause same damage if not worse. Sometimes toxins are small nano-micro crystals that do not vanish even after heat, and spores of shrooms take characteristics of it without even consuming-taking it. But generally pure-clean soil is the thing.

I re-grow shrooms in underground, in small quantity for my needs only, in similar as small paper racks over each other, over simple cooked clean grass and cooked tree shavings, shred pieces of any shroom and place them over it, then cut with scissors only the largest and let other to grow. With the extra not needed at the moment, simply shred dry then shred again until completely dry, for storage powder for soups or any, for taking in bag at other place or trip. It is very good in mix with other shred vegetables, and cooking in 5 minutes is ready soup meal.

@Nikola Maric It is not rule only toxic ground (my error), poisonous fungi develop also in group with other small micro spores, case mixing more sources for different fungi development, they those toxic separate from other with defense built in against others and grow more as strongest than others with the defense toxin. Actually, any foods in past after meteor or volcano been toxic, only cultivated purified became edible. Land itself from south-pole source (continents going to end inside north-pole vortex) is already purified water (initial h2o condensed) and almost everything else toxic. When I was a kid, I learned about mushrooms from a mushroom book that everyone had. The goal of that book was to clearly separate the edible from the toxic mushrooms, and provide examples of confusions that might happen, with a mantra that goes on like this: If you aren't sure, don't pick it.

I'm a city dweller for my entire life, but for me the death caps are a no-brainer. When I'd be looking for mushrooms, I'd look for very very specific ones, and ignore all others. I used to do that as a kid, but also got clear advice that even if you have a death cap somewhere among the mushrooms you picked, you can still get poisoned, so the lesson was clear: do not even touch mushrooms that you don't know.

This is not true. If you eat a death cap you can get poisoned. You can't get poisoned by touching a death cap or eating a mushroom that just touched a death cap. It's a very good practice to store mushrooms that you cannot identify as edible but want to study or identify later away from those you intend to eat.

@@runed0s86no. it can not. all Amanita mushrooms (some, like A. rubescens, the blusher, are edible) are mycorrhizal in nature. none of them is parasitic or able to feed on other fruiting bodies. there are seriously poisonous molds and you def should be aware of them and check if the mushrooms are not infected with molds, but "the Amanita mycelium" is nothing to worry about. nothing at all!

There's a rule of thumb I've heard that mushrooms that grow on lawns are usually safe but ,usually, isn't certain enough. I guess you look for oak trees in vicinity but they can attach to other tree roots. Example the Saffron milkcaps are supposedly around pine trees but I've seen them growing around tea trees ,, not the camillia tea species but the Australian tea tree . Seen the fairytale mushroom too around tea trees but often without the red and white dots but some still with dots .

"death caps" contains two poisons. One poison is destroyed when the mushroom is boiled, and the second poison is not destroyed. You can not take this mushroom with your hands. If "death caps" got into a container with safe mushrooms, then these mushrooms should be considered spoiled and subsequently disposed of. If you doubt the safety of the fungus, then it is better not to touch it. Even a harmless mushroom can be poisoned if it has grown near the corpse of an animal that you have not noticed.

Collecting mushrooms in the forest is like a national hobby in Czechia. How can anyone pick deathcap is a mystery to me. I do not collect anything that even remotely resembles this shroom. My friend and I used to go into the forests of Southern Ontario, Canada, to photograph mushrooms and while we did not intend to eat them, we wanted to identify them by their proper names. To that end we acquired a total of 17 books between the two of us and even those tended to conflict with one another. So you think you know mushrooms, but then again it only takes one or two to do the damage. I would not take a chance!

I know of a family that died in Zimbabwe from eating these. It’s sad cause they bought them thinking they were eatable. The worst part is mushrooms are normally sold by vendors especially when you travel to certain regions so they couldn’t identify who exactly had sold them these poisonous mushrooms. Really sad.

These moshrooms have always been present in Europe. Poland is a country where mushroom hunting is a long lived tradition, and there are lots of fungi in our forests. Some are deadly, some are uneatable, others are good and delicious. There also are some that people used to pick, but later it turned out that they aren't good, because though they don't kill you, they do damage your liver, only very, very slowly, over decades, even. I guess, one needs to be aware of what they are hunting for.

We have 5 types of amanita mushrooms growing in Estonia (green, red, pink, white and brown) and grew up learning to never touch them. The white one has got an especially cute nickname: Destroying Angel. Although, in Estonian, we call them 'kärbseseen', which translates to fly mushroom. We then add the name of their colour before it to differentiate them.

I saw a video that I believe was made in Australia and in it they made a special mushroom soup. This soup can only be made in old pots that will never be used for human or pet food. Once everything is cooked up you put the soup in an old bowl again not to be used for anything else with sugar sprinkled on top. You leave it out overnight and every fly in your house will be dead. I'm sure it would be good for the barn as well as long as none spills out and the animals are outside while this does its work.

They usually work by knocking out the production of particular enzymes. Once our stocks run out we die slowly, ending up with convulsions. With A. phalloides it takes 6-12 hours to begin then proceeds as stated, but there's another mushroom that takes about a month before the effects begin to be felt. Given that, mushroom toxicity is hardly a defence mechanism, it's more like a simple coincidence. Deer can eat A. phalloides with impunity, and they probably eat a lot more of all kinds of mushroom than humans do.

"the ball on the stem" is called here "goblet of death" (difference between meadow/field mushroom = they do not have it) greenish coulour is sometimes almost white. we have also "bella dona" plant or Paris quadrifolia which both looks yummy (like blueberry)

I used to live in NorCal and am quite familiar with the mushrooms that grow there. The death cap's characteristics are unmistakable and stands alone in it's appearance, especially with the cap fully opened. They are part of the forest's beauty, have medicinal qualities and is to be respected, not eradicated. Learn identification before harvesting.

a book I've read as a teenager on Mushrooms had a simple way of finding out if a Mushroom was deadly (this was years ago it may have been debunked so take it with a grain of salt)
it was with 3 characteristics, on their own they meant nothing but if they had all 3, it was a death sentence.
1: some of the gills were not strait but more like squiggles (I don't know how to properly describe)
2: had a ring on the stem (or stripe as it's called on mushrooms)
3: the bag like volva

I remember preventing some friends/comrades from eating some fatal mushrooms thanks to that book, for those curious the mushroom in question was Amanita Virosa, the only one in the book labeled as flat out deadly. (the book was about Mushrooms in Quebec and therefore was limited to what we found here in Quebec but it still allowed me to save lives)

I've studied and now plan to collect Chicken of the Woods mushrooms, which are easy to identify. They have some lookalikes, but they're easy to tell apart. But that's the only mushroom I will ever forage.

As a shrooms hunter and eater, I know that there is at least 42 different kinds of shrooms you can eat across the country. I only know of two for sure. So I only eat two kinds. But I have heard of the horror stories that goes with the wrong ones. Like this video shows, your liver could might be a goner. And you might be to. Thanks for sharing this story.

I doubt we will ever "master" space travel. The astronomical scales we are talking about are basically impossible to travel by means of modern technology and human biology. It would take hundreds of generations to get to a certain point if not thousands. Creating self sufficient space vessels that would last hundreds of generations is an incredible challenge in itself, not to mention the fact that humans are not built to survive in zero gravity. We lose eyesight after prolonged times in such an environment. Not only that but babies would be born with irreversible deformities that would probably significantly shorten their lifespan. Assuming the challenge of zero gravity is overcome, even the speed of light wouldn't be nearly enough to allow us to travel at a reasonable rate. So yeah, we are basically stuck here. That's also why we will never meet aliens.

Plenty of people collect wild mushrooms, but it's definitely not something for an amateur to do on their own. There are often little to no visible differences between a mushroom that's safe to eat, and one that will kill you.

I used to wild camp in the UK, I went into a forest to camp one summer, I was just kicking leaves about so I could pitch my tent and make fire, 30 mins later I couldn't breath, I came out of there and spent a night in a field, still tight chested for days later, I slowly got better, but 6 months later it started again, I ended up on ICU raspatory failure, that was 2018, I would never venture into a dank woodland without a mask on now, or better still pick your season very carefully, the DR'S said it could have been the spores and the dust.

I am not an expert on mushrooms but the death cap's appearance is unmistakable. In fact, most mushrooms with bright colors (green, red) in my country are dangerous.
Generally, if people can't resist foraging for mushrooms, they should stick to one kind only.
Another tip I know is to put parsley into the dish you are making. If the leaves of the parsley turn purple or blue, it means there is a poisonous mushroom in the dish.

People need to stop saying stuff like "the death cap's appearance is unmistakable" because that's not true, and a lot of people have ended up getting poisoned because they believe it. Mushrooms don't pop out of the ground fully-formed and perfectly-colored, and a lot of different kinds look extremely-similar before the cap opens and matures. They don't always look like the photos in the books.

It can be mistaken for a Russula aeruginea which is harmless, unless you eat it completely raw, but not deadly for sure. I have never heard of deadly Russulaceae, at least. In this case, one must pick it whole to be sure it has no "collar" or volva. Russulaceae have completely bare gills, unlike amanitas and agarici

I had a 15 yr old patient in the hospital with wildly elevated liver enzymes and pancreatitis. The doctor told the girl's mom she had to be drinking a hell of a lot to get that sick. The girl swore she did not drink at all. Later she told me she did not want her mom to know she tried to eat a pretty mushroom in the woods. I told her she needed to be honest with the doctor and explain it to her parents. She was did make a full recovery over time.

In discussion of the evolution of toxicity, it may be only a side effect not 'intended' as a toxin. That chemical quite possibly has other internal value to the fungus, and simply just happens to be toxic to some animals.
