When NEEDTOBREATHE’s Bear and Bo Rinehart set out to write the songs that appear on the band’s new album, The Reckoning, they felt something bigger awaited them. It wasn’t just commercial success either. The band’s last album The Outsiders hit No. 9 on Billboard’s Rock Albums chart, went Top 20 on the Top 200, saw the band sell out venues such as Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and Chicago’s House of Blues, and score an impressive number of placements in blockbuster films and numerous prime time television-shows.

With their reputation as a must-see live act built from non-stop touring, the Rinehart brothers, pastor’s sons who hail from the rural South Carolina town of Possum Kingdom, along with drummer Joe Stillwell and bass player Seth Bolt, were determined to create a statement-making album that truly captured the magic behind this genuinely appealing rock band.

Lyrically, all roads lead from the album’s title, which Bear says has several different meanings, one of them being the justification of accounts. “I like the idea that you put in all this work and at some point it comes to a peak -- that’s the reckoning time.”

What the band emerged with is a timeless-sounding album rooted in classic American rock and roll, unafraid to veer off into unexpected directions. Songs such as “Maybe They’re On To Us” address the paranoia of wondering whether people know too much about the band. “It also asks, ‘Are we still driven in the same way?’ We’re always questioning ourselves,” Bear says. Even the songs that may sound light-hearted on the surface, like “White Fences,” “Slumber,” and “Drive All Night,” explore serious themes. “’White Fences’ is about the American dream of growing up in a big house with a white picket fence, but when the dream is broken and things don’t pan out the way you planned, asking who’s going to fix it,” Bo says. “’Slumber’ is meant to be about how beauty is all around you but you just can’t see it because of the funk you’re in,” Bear says. “It speaks to something that we really care about which is giving yourself a chance.” And there’s “Drive All Night,” a galloping barnstormer that Bear sees as a statement on the false idea that one can run away from one’s problems.

With their intriguing melodies and bright choruses, the songs on The Reckoning are certain to translate in the live setting, something that is crucial to the band. “The worst thing that could happen is you get done playing and people don’t think about you again. We’ll do whatever it takes to force people to make a decision about our band, whether they love us or not. It makes for more passionate fans.”

This song is especially meaningful for me. My brother died last August. Since we were ten years apart and lived on opposite sides of the country, we were never really close for most of our lives, nothing in common and totally opposite worldviews. That all changed though when a heart defect caused him to lose everything and I brought him to live with me. I was shocked at how easy we were able to talk and communicate after being strangers for so long. Everything just fell into place and it was just us. I'm so grateful we had that chance to reconcile and be brothers even if it was just for a short while.

Even though its called "Brother" I want to dedicate this song to my sister. She died in 2000, and she had just turned 8 two weeks before. She died of cancer (not sure what kind) I never met her sadly. Her school dedicated a poem to her as well.

This song has a true meaning. My husband has a friend that was in the Vietnam War, he is like family like a brother to him. When his friend got out of the military, he would go through ptsd and night terrors my husband was there. He was his brother not by blood but by being a friend, a brother in need is family indeed .

Im 24 i grew up as a Jehovah's witness got heavy into drinking from 11th grad till i was 22 i was a satanist and was drinking up to a half gallon of whiskey a day. Didn't grow up in a Christian home but became a Believer later in adolescence. Totally spent my entire teens discovering and listening to Christian music. First concert was Skillet. Also saw Switchfoot in concert, they're a hoot. I listened mostly to the non-contemporary stuff tho like Newsboys (before Michael Tait took over), OC Supertones, Superchic[k], P.O.D., KJ-52, all kinds of rock, rap, and hardcore, and whatever played on one of our previously only 2 Christian radio stations. Sometimes I almost miss the rawness of Christian music/bands from the late 90s to 2000s. I have a harder time finding as much variety nowadays.

This song is especially meaningful to me, it reminds me of my loving brother Scott. Scott fought one heck of a battle with stage 4 brain cancer for
9 years. My heart ached for only a little bit. At his funeral, my loving brother showed himself to me, he was young, free, and at peace. Nate Neider amen brother in today's world it can feel like no one follows Christ anymore and your the only one left but there are more of us than you can imagine that's one of the best things about church is seeing your brothers and sisters in Christ and it shows how powerful Jesus Christ was to have so many following him still 2,000 years later amazing I can only imagine the impact Jesus made when he was here for people to drop everything and follow him especially in that time when people where being crucified for even talking about him and still they trusted in him and followed and carried his word

I read something in the Bible where Jesus is referred to as a ‘brother’. It’s sometimes hard , but ultimately, Christ is who we can lean on call on. who can take us higher. In Holy Spirit he is with us always, we need nothing to live up to, His love is unconditional and everlastingly.

Even though we all go through tough times, we need to remember that God is our shelter. Just like the lyrics say, he will never abandon us, he will never forget us. He always has unconditional love.
