During Nan's teenage years in Los Angeles, according to an interview in Cosmopolitan magazine, she discovered magic mushrooms and the guitar.
She played in a late 80's band called Babooshka, and in the 90's joined the touring bands both for ex-Police guitarist Andy Summers, and ex-Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart's backing band, The Spiritual Cowboys.
After a couple years in the UK and working with producers like Ian Stanley and Dave Stewart she eventually released several collaborations, some singles and her own debut album Manta Ray for Elektra in 1995 and a beautiful version of Moon River for a Del-Fi compilation of Henry Mancini songs, Shots in the Dark.
Record company coordination, and promotional support, both in the UK and the US, were fraught with difficulty, and her US label East/West folded shortly after her debut. Little was heard from the promising Ms. Vernon after this period.
Treasure

Smoke curls around your fingertips
Scratch the wind a welcome witness
Visions of Joe rush by your cheek
Small hands touch the windscreen
Leaves turn the pages to spring
Spikey trees as plump as plums
Calling long distance through the wet wires
Down to the ground where love starts to grow
Treasure, my treasure
Your kiss is so complete
Treasure, my treasure
You know I burn for this
Did you think that you could crack the glass
Wearing kid gloves and never get a scratch
And just as you got outside the door
You got the big surprise
Now it's got you from all sides
Calling long distance through the wet wires
Down to the ground where love starts to grow
Treasure, my treasure
Your kiss is so complete
Treasure, my treasure
You know I burn for this
I caught a glimpse of you though you didn't know
I was watching you I guess the flame still burns
I couldn't guess what you might be thinking
You're my treasure
The lyrics to Nan Vernon's song "Treasure" is full of vivid images and metaphors that convey a sense of mysteriousness and longing. The song appears to be about a person watching someone they desire from a distance, imagining what their life might be like, and wondering if they will ever be able to have them. The first verse says, "As you sit inside the yellow hall/ Smoke curls around your fingertips/ Scratch the wind a welcome witness/ Visions of Joe rush by your cheek." The use of the color yellow could symbolize either happiness, as it is often associated with sunshine and warmth, or caution, as it can also be a warning sign. Smoke symbolizes mystery and hidden truths while the wind represents change and growth. The phrase "visions of Joe rush by your cheek" might mean that the person is reminiscing about someone they used to know or love.
The second verse expands on the theme of change and growth. "Small hands touch the windscreen/ Leaves turn the pages to spring/ Spikey trees as plump as plums/ We're not waiting we're on the run." Here, the singer may be talking about the natural cycle of life and how it moves forward relentlessly, regardless of whether people are ready for it or not. The sprouting leaves, spikey trees, and plump plums are all signs of new beginnings and growth. The last line, "We're not waiting we're on the run" suggests a sense of urgency and restlessness.
In the chorus, the singer refers to the person they desire as their "treasure". "Treasure, my treasure/ Your kiss is so complete/ Treasure, my treasure/ You know I burn for this." The repeated use of the word "treasure" emphasizes the depth of feeling and longing that the singer has for this person. The line "Your kiss is so complete" suggests that the singer has been able to experience physical intimacy with this person at some point in the past, and that it has left a deep impression on them.
Overall, the lyrics to Nan Vernon's song "Treasure" are full of rich symbolism and evocative imagery that hint at a complex emotional landscape. The longing and desire that the singer expresses for their "treasure" is palpable, and the sense of urgency and restlessness that runs throughout the song adds to its emotional intensity.
