Guess Who I Saw Today ?
Nancy Wilson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're so late getting home from the office, Did you miss your train?
Where you caught in the rain?
No, don't bother to explain.
Can I fix you a quick martini?

As a matter of fact
I'll have one with you,
For to tell you the truth
I've had quite a day too!

Guess who I saw today, my dear!
I went in town to shop around
For something new,
And thought I'd stop and have a bite

When I was through.
I looked around for someplace near,
And it occurred to me
Where I had parked the car,

There is a most attractive French cafe
And bar.
It really wasn't very far.
The waiter showed me to a dark,

Secluded corner,
And when my eyes became accustomed
To the gloom,
I saw two people at the bar

Who were so much in love,
That even I could spot it clear
Across the room.
Guess who I saw today, my dear!

I've never been so shocked before.
I headed blindly for the door.
They didn't see me passing through,

Guess who I saw today?
Guess who I saw today?

Guess who I saw today?
I saw you!

Overall Meaning

The song "Guess Who I Saw Today" by Nancy Wilson tells a story of two people, one coming home late from work and the other going out to run errands in the city. They both end up at a French cafe unknowingly crossing paths. The male speaker is asked by his partner if he missed his train, but he deflects and instead suggests making martinis. The female speaker then describes her day, including going to a French cafe where she saw two people deeply in love. The twist comes when she reveals that one of the people in love was her partner, leading to a surprise ending where she admits to having seen him with someone else.

The lyrics paint a picture of a crumbling relationship, with the couple's communication and trust eroding. The man's deflection of the question about his lateness and the woman's observation of him being with someone else suggest that they are both hiding things from each other. The song's message is about the importance of honesty and communication in a relationship, and the consequences of neglecting those factors.

Overall, "Guess Who I Saw Today" is a poignant and powerful song that explores the complex emotions and dynamics that can arise in a troubled relationship.

Nancy Wilson is one of the most gorgeous, fabulous women God ever made. The woman can sing. She is absolutely beautiful. She has aged so gracefully over the years. I have loved her since I was a kid. My parents bought her albums. I am 57 years old and she is still one of my most favorite songstress'. I saw her this past summer at the Hollywood Bowl and she was still as fabulous as ever. People walked her to her seat on stage and she sat and sang to us. I was mesmerized. Love you Nancy Wilson!!

So true. I’m back here after listening to Samara Joy’s Jimmy Kimmel version. Nothing tops Nancy in my humble opinion. 💗
