Someone To Watch Over Me
Nancy Wilson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a saying old says that love is blind
Still were often told, seek and ye shall find
So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind
Looking everywhere, haven't found him yet

Hes the big affair I cannot forget
Only man I ever think of with regret
I'd like to add his initial to my monogram
Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb?

There's a somebody I'm longing to see
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone who'll watch over me
I'm a little lamb who's lost in the wood
I know I could always be good
Someone who'll watch over me

Although he may not be the man some
Girls think of as handsome
To my heart he carries the key
Won't you tell him please to put on some speed

Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me

Overall Meaning

In the song Someone To Watch Over Me, Nancy Wilson sings about her search for love and longing for someone to protect and care for her. The lyrics suggest that, despite love being "blind," she is still in search of a specific person who she cannot forget. She thinks of him with regret, and imagines adding his initial to her monogram. She's lost and in need of a "shepherd," or someone to protect her and guide her, saying she's a "little lamb who's lost in the woods." Throughout the song, she expresses her hope to find this person who will watch over her and be there for her.

The lyrics of Someone To Watch Over Me speak to a universal need for love and protection. The song has been covered by many artists over the years, including Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, and Amy Winehouse. The song was originally written by George and Ira Gershwin for the 1926 musical Oh, Kay! The show itself was not a huge success, but the song has become a beloved classic.

Nancy Wilson is one of the most gifted vocalists who ever gave voice to song. The long, sustained note she sings from 1:24- to-1:36 is one of the most sublime notes ever to grace the lips of any singer, from any genre of music. She continues the song without even taking a breath and this is a wonder to me, to this very day. Damn, those are one golden set of pipes! I still get goose-bumps each and every time I listen to this immaculate performance. Nancy... thank you for sharing with us.

Nancy had it all, and used it all! Such a remarkable inimitable talent, who gave us countless hours of love and enjoyment with her music, and now, we only have her recordings, but they'll help us never forget her or her artistry!

Absolutely one of the best renditions...One of my favorite jazz albums of all time. Like many others, I get goose bumps every time I hear this, especially at the sustained last note of the bridge. I am a guitarist but I leaned a lot how to phrase from Ms.Wilson. If you are an instrumentalist and wants to REALLY learn this song, you should try to play along with her and you will be amazed how wonderfully detailed (and difficult) her phrasing is.

It isn't just her phrasing, her breath control was remarkable, and she was ALWAYS right on pitch. Nancy could tell a story in her songs like no other! Just a consummate professional and one of the best talents to ever grace our planet! She's above it now, RIP, Nancy.

This recording of "Someone to Watch Over Me" was the first version of this song I heard, when I was still a teen and just getting into jazz. A decade later and it's still my favorite.
