When they arrive, because of the arbitrary "new speak" they so enjoy, they'll call themselves "indigenous/native people, living in Europe", but the native/indigenous people of Europe are not given those terms. This is orphaning a people of it's history and identity.

Basically the native European themselves becomes strangers and foreigners everywhere in this "new, post modern, post colonialism, post patriarchal world". All the terms I used simply mean "post native European world", are saturated with a negative connotation but never transparent in what they refer to.

Notice how the narrative they use and its words make white people the "strangers" and "outsiders" anywhere in their new world, there's no place for them, always an "outside group", devoid of the humanizing characteristics they give to all other groups, such as "native to this place", "of color" (by definition white people are also of color), "indigenous", "minority". Denying them all of these definitions, is done with the intent of excluding them from what makes a human in their new world and thus setting the ground work for all sorts of crimes, to be openly done on them without moral condemnation.

People have been living in Scandinavia ever since the glaciers first started to withdraw (at least). My ancestors moved in from the south hunting seals and the ancestors of the Sami moved in to the north from Asia. It could be argued that the Sami are "indigenous" to the northern parts of Scandinavia but I, and the other Scandinavians, are just as "indigenous" to the south.

The left love to argue that indigenous peoples should have the right to their ancestral lands and that their languages and cultures should be preserved and protected from outside influence and colonialism. That's why the left are so unwilling to admit that the European peoples are indigenous to Europe, since they hate the implications if they apply the same logic to Europeans.

@p su There are DNA studies that show that the Sami came in several waves to Northern Scandinavia. There are signs of habitation or at least seasonal fishing along the whole Norwegian coastline 10-12000 years ago, and somewhat younger signs of reindeer hunting in the mountains. There is no direct evidence that the people who were fishing in Southern Norway were displacing Sami forefathers when doing so. Basically, the Sami remained reindeer herders, and the fishermen remained fishermen. There were some cultural exchange in the borderlands, though.

The whole concept of "self-identification" with any particular group anywhere in the world, on the basis of "ethnic purity" is a scam. We are all mutts, and have been so since the beginning. Once you read a bit history, and even a bit about prehistory, that should become abundantly clear.

There can be argument made, that Indoeuropean migration that started around 4,000 BCE is what had the most impact on shape of the current European culture includimg language and other cultural influences.

However Indoeuropeans originate probably from area of nowadays Ukraine, so they were still indigenous to the Europe anyway as their ancestors lived concurrently with pre-indoeuropean population in the rest of Europe.

It would be as if one native tribe in America culturally/militarily conquered the rest of native tribes. Which BTW happend as there were several distinct major waves of migrations since the first settlers crossed from Asia to Alaska around 15,000 years ago.

The Inuit are not native to Greenland. They arrived around the time that the Norse did, displacing the "paleo-eskimos" (we know very little about them just that they existed and did not interbreed with the Inuit). Also, Greenland is part of the North American continental plate, thus is not Europe.

I remember a confused American trying to call the Sámi "people of color" because they are indigenous people. A significant part of the Sámi people are borderline albino white with deep blue eyes and platinum white hair (not blonde, literally white) in a way that makes the typical Swedish blonde look swarthy.

In my experience, Swedish education has taught the Sami as "the indigenous people of Sweden" for a long time (i was first taught this in 2008 or so. Not explicitly saying that svear, götar and gutar (i don't know what they would be called in English) aren't, but i recognize it now how much guilt and shaming that was part of our history education.

The Götar and the Gutar are lumped together as the Geats in English, and the Svear are just Swedes, sometimes with "old" in front to distinguish them as the historic group and not just anyone from modern Sweden. Modern academics generally use the endonym rather than the Anglo-Saxon exonym for them, unless speaking in a historic context though so feel free to use either, most English speakers won't be familiar with them regardless of how you refer to them.

Finland is quite young country in terms of farming. Granted, a 5,000-year-old paddle was found here, which suggests at fishing, hunting and gathering culture.

Due to harsh climate, people herded reindeer and lived in tent villages (excluding Turku), even after Columbus discovered America. Kuopio City Hall was completed in 1886.

@Jussi M. Konttinen While the spread of settlement to former wilderness areas as technology permits is interesting it doesn't speak for the broader picture. People tend to prefer living by the coastal areas, due to access to food and trade. As such more remote areas get settled later.

This makes anomalies like Machu Picchu all the more interesting, we still don't know why the Incas decided to build there.

My last name is Lappalainen, which essentially means Laplander. In Finland the term "Lappi" (=Lapland) was historically used to describe the lands outside the realm of influence of the Swedish kingdom and the network of the castles and churches in Finland, and the name "lappalainen" was used to describe the people living in there. In fact my own ancestor was Olli Heikinpoika Lappalainen whose land was expropriated by the Swedish king's orders in 1552 to form the congregation of Kuopio which began the development of the city of Kuopio onto my ancestors' lands. Btw I'm not a Sami nor am I in any way related to them, I have blue eyes and blond hair and I speak Savonian Finnish.

My great grandfather spoke Provencal, One of the Occitan languages/dialects that are indigenous to southern France and these languages are in more threat of extinction than Sami i would argue. They get very littler press or attention and had ruthless campaign starting under Napoleon and the creation of public schools to destroy their identity and languages. I can't remember where I heard/read this, so take this statement with a grain of salt:

Someone once suggested to have Sami people settle Alaska as a way to colonize it more smoothly.

Also there are very few Sami people that even Scandinavians can tell are Sami from appearance. So their status as indigenous is almost entirely based on their unique language and culture. Their traditional Sami way of life certainly helped them survive the interior north better than Scandinavians.

i remember when i was in school 7-12year old and forced to read about the sami in the swedish history book. One part was describing their religious practice and it included a ritual where they would bang on a drum until they passed out and start dreaming or hallucinating, sometime they wouldn't wake up from this and died. I remember answering the worksheet question about their ritual as "they have a suicide drum".

Same crap in Norway. A lot of that shit was woke as hell and this was back in the 80s in my case. Apparently some people in the northern parts of the country (I live in the south and I've never met one of these lap-people in my entire life) forced these people to go to school and learn Norwegian. For some reason we were lead to believe this was bad in some way to learn these interlopers the language of us native Norwegians. The whole thing was weird and most of us kids didn't believe a word of it.

@Fedorevsky the Sami people lived in Norway long before the nation 'norway' was founded. Yes your ancestors lived there, for thousands of years longer. But they weren't a nation back then. Before that it was just medieval tribes and feudal kingdoms, living mostly in the south, and being busy invading other places in the rest of Europe. The Sami people didn't walk in your country, because your country didn't exist yet.

When looking back in history especially talking about borders and land, people tend to project our modern understanding of what we now call nations, on the past. The idea of a nation, a social structure with agreed on borders, a central government, and unified institutions is a modern invention, not much older than 200 years. And most nations are barely a 100 years old, since they started making constitutions, having judicial systems and nationalized education.

A medieval kingdom is not the same as a modern nation. Your ancestors didn't even speak Norwegian when the Sami came, they spoke old Norse. So according to that logic you are obligated to still speak old Norse... Instead of the Danish/swedish infused modern gibbirish you speak now...

I'm glad that Carl briefly mentioned the Basque, because them not being included as indigenous is by far the most ridiculous part of this. I mean I'm sure we all agree here that major European populations like the English, French and Italians are obviously indigenous, but the Basque have been in Europe so long that they are a pre-Indo-European people and we have no idea where there ancestors are from, predating the arrival of the ancestors of nearly all Europeans, Persians and North Indians is about as indigenous as it gets.

I remember walking around Tromso while on a 24hr furlow (nato exercise); checking out a used book store where I came across an old 100 ish yr old book studying the differences between the Sami vs Europeans. Seemed they were well aware of significant physiological differences. However wrt to Greenland, the Inuit displaced the Dorset along the North American arctic & didn’t colonise Greenland until much later. In fact it could be argued that the Norse occupied their portion of Greenland before Inuit settled these abandoned areas after the Norse settlements failed during the mini ice-age. Was always food for thought though.

They're basically trying to revert society back to Ancient Grecian settlements and the localized factionalism they had, complete with racial animosities and claims to primacy for a city or a state. The sami people have been interbreeding with scandinavians AT LEAST since King Haakon V Magnusson consolidated his rule of the the region of Finnmark by building the first Vardøhus castle in 1306. So a lot of them have a lot of typical germanic characteristics as well.

Modern humans entered Europe around 50,000 years ago, and coexisted with Neanderthals until those died out. It is believed Neanderthals lived in Eurasia for something like 200,000 years, so one could say they were the native indigenous population of Europe.
Other than that, the Modern humans might have been like the Cro-Magnon. Undoubtedly, they mixed with neighboring peoples and populated most of Europe. Then, between 6000 and 8000 years ago people from Southern Russia started to make incursions Westward, bringing with them the Indo-European language, the wheel (wagons, actually), horses and cattle, advanced metallurgy, and other innovations. They became the dominant culture in all of Europe, except perhaps in Finland, Andorra, and Albania, where Indo-European is not spoken. It's possible the Indo-Europeans did dominate those places before others came to in turn overwhelm them. Hungary is a special case, as their language is not Indo-European, but the Slavic majority there dominates.
The successive waves of the Indo-European people probably conquered and annihilated some of the populations who already lived all over Europe, but most of the time they would have mixed with them. One couldn't say that the Indo-Europeans are not indigenous because they did come from Europe. So the mix of the older populations with the Indo-Europeans are rightfully the indigenous people of Europe, and they are "us" today. So we ain't going nowhere.

One thing we have to realise is that these narratives are designed to delegitimise European people's claims to Europe and right to self govern, self determination and right to the land. Yes, Finno-Ugric people possibly lived in northern Europe before the Indo-Europeans migrated in, the problem with this narrative is the Hungarian people fall into the Finno-Ugric language category, therefore this classification would regard Hungarians as indigenous. And yet, when Hungary opposed migration and refugees, and when the Hungarian government seeks to promote ethnic Hungarian interests, they never say that they have the right to do so because they are indigenous.

If you go by language, most European languages originate from the area of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, which is still Europe, and the Saami also came from around that region, only coming to their current homeland (the north of Scandinavia) around the beginning of the Common Era, which is when the Germanic peoples were already living in central and northern Europe as well. So they are on even footing when it comes to how indigenous they are.

But aside from language, the peoples that migrated from the east of Europe to the west (Saami, the ancestors of the proto-Germanic peoples, etc.) did not completely replace the peoples already living there, I presume. Were they genetically not already closely related and just mixed to form the current European peoples?

And thirdly, we're talking about at least 2000 to 3000 years ago if not longer than that, while many places in the Pacific have only been settled a few hundred years ago and we call them indigenous. We can safely say that because they were the first humans to arrive on the islands. But in Europe, there were no first people, unless you go back to the first modern humans around 40,000 years ago and still they replaced Neanderthals who arrived 150,000 years ago and they themselves replaced even earlier human species, the earliest of which arrived millions of years ago.

Why is it we consider peoples from all continents indigenous except for Europeans?

Well as far as the evidence can tell modern native European people's are descended from 3 main groups. The stone age hunter gathers and original inhabitants of Europe the middle Eastern farming cultures and the steppe nomads from the Eurasian plains which means that every European person is indigenous to Europe by right of descent. So by that definition if white European people's with their something like 40 000 years in Europe (remember right of descent) are not indigenous to Europe then really no one is indigenous to anywhere. So by that logic if no one is indigenous then what is the argument for the say Britain turning up to Tunisia with gunboats saying we're taking over being wrong?

The Indo-European peoples migrated into Europe beginning 6000 years ago and mostly wrapping up around 3000 years ago. Displacing or integrating any people who were there before them.
The iron age migration period did lead to Europeans shuffling around, but they were all basically European except for the Huns and Fins who were Asian.

They didn't displace or integrate all the previous peoples. Finns and related peoples to the northeast survived as did Basques in France and Spain. Many other non Indo-European languages survived in places like Spain and Italy before being replaced by Latin

@Staring Into Eternity again, the Finns and their relatives are Uralic people who arrived there in the 400s AD following behind the Huns and Magyars.
The Basques and Etruscans did continue to exist, and a few other holdouts in far western Spain and Portugal. Although, the Etruscans seem to have migrated into Italy after this, not before.
However the majority of Europe was conquered by the Kurgan, who evolved into the Celtic, Germanic, and Latin Cultures over the course of the mid-late bronze age and very early iron age.

I don't know if you can technically call Finns Asians. They came from the Ural Mountains, and the dividing line between Europe and Asia is the Eastern edge of the Urals. So geographically they might not be Asian.
And genetically is not certain either. Some time ago I spent several hours looking at people living in the Urals today. I used Google, and went south to all the way north. The various tribes and pockets of populations varied widely. I don't know which of the tribes migrated to Finland, but I found tribes looking very White and European even in the very north. I also found very Asiatic looking people. The people living in the Urals are definitely not a genetically homogeneous group.

The Sami migrated west from Asia relatively late, after the Indo-Europeans which actually makes them one of Europe's youngest and least native cultures however they were first in the northern parts of Scandinavia excluding the now dead hunter-gatherer cultures that the Sami absorbed (only the females though according to genetics, the males probably were killed of by the Sami). Later they encountered the more aggressive Germanic culture to the south and for some 100 years in the Medieval to the Victorian age they were somewhat oppressed (not genocided).

My ancestors have been living newar the confluence of Sava into the Danube since before modern Humans were a thing in Europe, with tools dated as way back as 400.000 years. They have literally evolved in what used to be the shore of the Panonian sea.

At that point, there were no humanoids on the American continent, let alone anything resembling modern humans. The Inuit crossed to what is today Canada only 300.000 years later.

Technically the Siberians are on the Eurasian Plate so they have some sort of claim, however, Greenland is on the North American subplate, moving away from the Eurasian plate, so they can clearly knob off back to America albeit at 3cm per year.

Wrong. The Sami were actually pushed north during the feudal ages forward. The Swedish crusades gave impetuous for the newly Christianized Finns to push the new borders of the realm, when promised taxation rights over the fur trade that the Sami controlled. That said, the Sami were the last group to migrate west, so it was more of a big push BACK at them.
