Holy Roller
Nazareth Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Where you think you know
All the answers
Arrogance and pride....are sin
Better look to your, own chances
[Chorus]
Holy roller can you save your own soul
Holy roller
Standin', up for jesus
That's your thing
But you're standin' on peoples hearts
Charity is a virtue
To be praised
Better get back on...Jesus' track
[Chorus]
Holy roller, practice what you preach
Heaven, it's still within your reach
Holy roller, don't you judge
What you think is goin' wrong
[Chorus: x2]
The lyrics of Nazareth's song "Holy Roller" are a commentary on the hypocrisy and self-righteousness of some religious leaders. The singer of the song is a "holy roller" who claims to have all the answers and stands up for Jesus, but in reality, he is full of arrogance and pride. The song questions whether the holy roller can actually save his own soul, and whether he is truly following Jesus' teachings. The chorus, which repeats the line "Holy roller, can you save your own soul?" emphasizes this point.
The second verse suggests that the holy roller is not practicing what he preaches. He may claim to be charitable and virtuous, but he is actually hurting people and standing on their hearts. The song warns the holy roller to get back on track and to practice what he preaches. The final verse advises the holy roller not to judge others and to focus on his own failings rather than what he perceives to be wrong in the world.
Overall, the song is a reminder that true faith involves humility, self-reflection, and concern for others. It warns against the dangers of self-righteousness and the importance of practicing what one preaches.

I'm here because I was thinking about all the artists who have passed away recently. I remember listening to this song and others back in 1980. It was released as a single in 1975. I wore out my Cassette tape listening to this. Dan, you're the man! RIP.
