From the 1960s to the 1980s, Diamond was one of the more successful pop music performers, scoring a number of hits. As critic William Ruhlmann writes, "as of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand, on the list of the most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart."[1] As of May 2005 he has sold 120 million records worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S.[2]
Though his record sales declined somewhat after the 1980s, Diamond continues to tour successfully, and maintains a very loyal following. Diamond's songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from many different musical genres.
Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984, and then in 2000 was given its Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the early part of 2011.
In 2008 Neil Diamond scored his first ever Billboard number one album with "Home Before Dark", the album also became his first studio album to get to number one in the UK.

Honeymooners at last alone
Feeling, far above far
Oh how lucky we are
While I give to you and you give to me
True love, true love
So on and on it will always be
True love, true love
On high, with nothing to do
But to give to you and to give to me
Love forever true
But to give to you and to give to me
Love forever true
Love forever true
The lyrics of Neil Diamond's True Love depict a newlywed couple on their honeymoon, feeling fortunate to have found each other and appreciating their strong love. The opening lines "sun tanned, wind blown, honeymooners at last alone" signify the couple's physical appearance, which has been affected by their time spent outdoors on their honeymoon. The use of the phrase "at last alone" emphasizes the rarity of being away from the obligations of daily life to spend time together. The couple is in a state of bliss, indicated by the phrase "feeling, far above far," which alludes to a sense of transcendence.
The chorus of the song is where the concept of true love is introduced. As the couple gives to each other, their love is reciprocated and remains true, symbolized by the repetition of the phrase "true love." They believe that their love is eternal and will continue endlessly, as indicated by the line "so on and on it will always be." The couple acknowledges the presence of a guardian angel, who is watching over their love from above. They believe that this guardian angel has nothing to do except ensure that their love endures always.
In summary, True Love by Neil Diamond is a celebration of the beauty and depth of true love between two people. The lyrics describe a couple who are reveling in the joy of their honeymoon, while believing that their love is eternal and will always remain true. They acknowledge the presence of a guardian angel who is watching over their love and who will ensure that it endures forever.
