Having success on his own for a bit, he later joined the folk rock supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash as a fourth member in 1969, thus forming Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. He forged a successful and acclaimed solo career, releasing his first album in 1968. His career has since spanned over 40 years and 34 studio albums, with a continual and uncompromising exploration of musical styles; his musical vision is notably referred to by his autobiographical tune"The Loner". Music critics have often called him one of the best single artists of all time, and several tunes such as "Heart of Gold" and "Rockin' in the Free World" remain popular on rock radio.
According to the Don't Be Denied Songfacts, the 16-year-old Neil was raising chickens and selling the eggs, with plans to go to Ontario Agricultural College and be a farmer. Only his leisure activities foretold his future, when he would hide from his family problems in his room with his transistor radio playing local station CHUM. From this, Young experienced a growing admiration for rock n roll originators such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and, of course, Elvis Presley. In 1958, his father bought Neil his first music instrument, a plastic ukulele. His father would later recall, "He would close the door of his room... and we would hear plunk, pause while he moved his fingers to the next chord, plunk, pause while he moved again, plunk."
In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Neil started his professional music career in the mid-60s with a number of bands in Canada, including the Squires and later the Mynah Birds, which also included fellow future Buffalo Springfield bassist Bruce Palmer and future funk star Rick James. When the Mynah Birds broke up, Young and Palmer headed to California to meet Stephen Stills, whom he had met in Thunder Bay, and the result was Buffalo Springfield. That band split up after releasing three critically acclaimed albums, particularly achieving international fame for their tune "For What It's Worth".
Showing his strengths as a cynical yet experimental songwriter in the group, he also sung prominently in some of the band's songs such as the biting satire of 'rock star' life "Mr. Soul". Neil soon started his solo career with the release of 'Neil Young' on November 12, 1968. The album did not do very well commercially, but it included several strong tracks, including "The Loner", said to be a portrait of Stephen Stills but also being deeply auto-biographical.
On May 14, 1969, he recruited members of Crazy Horse and made the critically acclaimed 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere'. This was a much more consistent album, being the first to introduce longstanding collaborators Crazy Horse and beingbuilt around the balanced interplay between the guitar playing of Young and the talented Danny Whitten. The album also featured two lengthy classics, "Down by the River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand". The critically acclaimed solo album "After the Gold Rush" came out in 1971, featuring such classic songs as "Southern Man'", "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and "Don't Let it Bring You Down". Harvest followed in 1972 with the hit"Heart of Gold".
During this time he also enjoyed considerable success as a quarter of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
Neil's subsequent work has zig-zagged across genres - dabbling in country rock on "Old Ways"; electronics on "Trans"; hooking up with the Shocking Pinks in a homage to old-time Rock 'n' Roll on "Everybody's Rockin'"; creating a wall of feedback on the live Arc-Weld; and cementing his status as Godfather of Grunge when collaborating with Pearl Jam on Mirror Ball.
His idiosyncratic approach to genre even led to him being sued by his record company (Geffen) in the 80s for making "uncharacteristic" music.
Young has also dabbled in film, most recently on the album/concert series/dvd Greendale.
Young is often known by the nickname "Shakey." According to his biographer Jimmy McDonough, the name was given by his friends after noticing very unsteady results holding a camera for home movies.
Young founded Pono Music, whose mission was to bring a digital player, download store, and streaming service devoted to hi-res music. It was a commercial flop and was shut down in 2016. Young has stated that the labels would not agree that "All songs should cost the same, regardless of digital resolution."
The film Canadian Bacon includes the line "Canadians are always trying to figure out a lot of ways to ruin our lives. The metric system, for the love of God! Celsius! Neil Young!"

When I Hold You In My Arms
Neil Young Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's a breath of fresh air
When I hold you in my arms
I forget what's out there
All those people with their faces
Walkin' up the street
They don't have to say a thing
Just look around and you see
New buildings going up
Old buildings coming down
New signs going up
Old signs coming down
You gotta hold onto something in this life
Well the older generation
They got something to say
But they better say it fast
Or get outta the way
All those gangsters with their crimes
They make it look so good
We've been blowing up the planet
Just like the old neighborhood
New buildings going up
Old buildings coming down
New signs going up
Old signs coming down
You gotta hold onto something in this life
If I only had a heart
It would beat all night for you
If I only had a heart
I would cry the whole day through
When I hold you in my arms
It's like a breath of fresh air
When I hold you in my arms
I forget what's out there
Old heart's going up
Old heart's coming down
My feelings going up
My feelings coming down
You gotta hold onto someone in this life
When I hold you in my arms
It's a breath of fresh air
When I hold you in my arms
I forget what's out there
Neil Young's song "When I Hold You in My Arms" is a soothing love song that expresses a sense of relief and escapism in the arms of a loved one. The first verse expresses the feeling of renewal and freedom that comes with holding a partner. The singer forgets about his surroundings and the people in it when he's holding his lover. The second verse touches on the instability of the world, with buildings coming up and coming down and the fast pace of life. The singer suggests finding something or someone to hold on to in the midst of chaos.
The chorus shifts the song back to the peaceful feeling of being with a loved one. Neil Young sings about his feelings, stating that if he had a heart, he would beat for his lover all night long and cry all day long. The bridge expands on the feeling of needing to hold on to someone, with Young saying that he's holding on to his lover's heart as well. Overall, the lyrics of the song suggest the importance of having someone to hold onto in the midst of life's uncertainties.

Old heart's going up,
My heart has been through a lot.
old heart's coming down,
And it has also experienced pain and loss.

Thank you Neil Young for your authentic artistry ...
along the bumpy roads of Life.
This song brings tears of bittersweet remembrance
of our lives living as a young family in the rural
mountains. Sold everything in the S.F. Bay Area
and moved to a tiny town in the middle of nowhere
with two small boys. Grew our own food, fell trees,
split wood, many animals. Approaching 70 now, but
it enriches my Soul even now in ... blowing in like
The Prairie Wind......
LOVE to ALL

Sentenced To Eternity
I knew a little girl in Texas
she was bad
as bad can be
badder than
the baddesst part of me
all I can see
is my badass
Shawna Lee
she's badder than
the baddesst part of me
I'm doin' time now
and that's ok
she'll get me by somehow
I'm doin' eternity
for my badass Shawna Lee
workin' the rock pile
toein' the line
I can see her smile
and I feel fine
she'll send me a file
I'll cut through the bars
open up the sky
steal forever's stars
I'll do infinity
I'll populate Mars
I'll sing for Shawna Lee
just a jail bird
and a songbird
singin' in the yard
in two part harmony
Michelle and Shawna Lee
singin' eternally
won't get no probation
won't get no parole
I'm locked up forever
soul to soul
free as free can be
doin' eternity
for my darlin' Shawna Lee
end
Good morning my eternal darling, how are you? As Geoff Bartley puts it so well: "everything is gettin' weird". That's for sure but I want more. I'm still sleepy. Had first cig already but they're not my favorites and I bought a carton. Yesterday was not my quittin' day. Still sleepy. Gonna smoke another one then cuddle up for the day with a halo round my head kissin' my darlin' who raised me from the dead. I love You my blessed holy sacred wise and good sister lover friend. Why would anyone wanna be free when they could listen to Shawna Lee for eternity? Beats me. All I see is infinity me and Shawna Lee kissin' kissin' kissin' won't miss a second cause I'm doin' the stars with my darlin' Shawna Lee. Kisses. Michelle
