Good work by the actor, it just drives me crazy as a historian, as poor put upon Pilar forced to kill an innocent by those scheming Pharisees is historically antisemitic Roman propaganda. In actual history, Pilat was sending hundreds of innocent Jews to the cross on a weekly basis as part of mass executions to punish any act of rebellion.

But it was important for the early Church to position themselves as Roman-friendly, so shifting blame for the crucifixion onto the Jews from Rome got enshrined in Matthew.

This could have gone extremely wrong if Pilate just flogged the crowd instead to show them a real example of being actually occupied.

I'm hardly a history expert, but from what I'm finding, there were some propaganda efforts in the early 300s (the years leading up to the Council of Nicaea, in which the tenets of Christianity were formalised) from both Romano-Christian apologists and Roman polytheists for the exoneration of Pilate, but those were centuries after the Gospels were written (70-110), which are what the musical text is almost entirely based upon.

Philo of Alexandria, a philosopher contemporary to Pilate, does argue the "Pilate as brutal dictator" angle, but he does not comment on Pilate's actions in this case, and this angle is not supported by the other major non-biblical contemporary account of Pilate's actions, by the historian Flavius Josephus, who describes Pilate in much more neutral terms and even explicitly supports the Biblical narrative that Pilate only condemned Jesus to crucifixion at the prodding of the Jewish authorities. Additionally, generally speaking, the Roman punitive system did indeed typically require a conclusive verdict of an acknowledged crime for an execution, but on the other hand, mass crucifixions of rebels were known to happen as a way of brutally maintaining social order following an uprising.

Ultimately, it seems like both in the biblical and non-biblical records, Pilate's motivations and behaviour with respect to Jesus are very ambiguous, so making big declarative statements on that front are questionable at best.

This is far to theatrical and makes to much entertainment of the flogging for my liking.

In the orginal the characters were also more even, there was a strong Jesus with more oomp! I liked that.

I feel I had the feeling about Pilate, though my Bible study did kind of pointed out how how much he wanted to avoid killing Jesus, and this scene just encapsulates it all with how he shouts "I need a crime" and how horrified and sorrowful he looks when he washes his hands, with some of Jesus' blood on his face.

I can appreciate what he's trying to do: he's going for a lot of subtext. I think his idea is that Pilate's overly macho forcefulness is all a show he's putting on to appear intimidating to the people around him, but inside Pilate is deeply scared. The "real" Pilate is the one we see during Pilate's Dream, and the rest is an act that Pilate himself is putting on. This is deep stuff that really demonstrates Johanson worked hard at figuring out the character's motivations, but the problem is it's just way too much to get across. It took me multiple viewings to fully understand the subtext he was going for, and without that full understanding, this performance comes across as wildly over the top and inconsistent. Just look at how he acts during the counting of the 39 lashes: his voice keeps switching from being psychotic, sadistic, calm, sympathetic, horrified, all at once, and it changes completely randomly. I think the director needed to reel him in here and there, because the performance is so over the top that the character's motivation gets really muddled.

I really can't agree with this take. Sorry. This implies the Jewish people are directly responsible for Jesus Christ's death. It's a take/interpretation that further perpetuates not only antisemitism but Christian exceptionalism.

When will people understand that it was never the Jews who sent him to death but rather he himself who went to sacrifice himself for the sins of mankind? People always seem to forget that's how that's supposed to work.

They both don’t want to hurt Jesus because even though they both know it’s what Jesus wants, they know everyone will blame them. People seem to forget that this production was made to capture the look and feel of a real theater performance. That's why the camera largely stays at one angle and most of the sets are enclosed spaces you could theoretically create on stage. In the same vein, a lot of the singing and the portrayal of characters is done in a way to capture the feel and flamboyance of a theater production of the time. Everyone I know who enjoyed theater from this time and my parents who worked on the actual set of a production of Jesus Christ Superstar all prefer this portrayal over the 1973 film that is clearly more just a musical than any attempt at a theater style performance. The over acting in JCS 2001 and the injection of raw emotions into the singing clearly mimics theater where such things are done to make it easier for an audience watching from a distance to feel the emotion of the characters on stage.

I understand and respect that, but to me personally that's why I'm watching a movie and not a play. I don't want those ever exaggerative expressions to appeal to a crowd. There isn't one. You're showing ME a production, yet you're pretending as if it's being shown to a crowd. It doesn't work. I thought the Nazi regalia was a little too on the nose; a man in charge of executing the King of Jews? Pilate was nothing like the Nazis though, even tried to save Jesus from his own people. Probably could've made more effort, but look at it from his perspective- he's ruling Jerusalem by proxy for Rome. A single blunder in day-to-day tasks, like dealing with criminals or having a military crackdown, could mean his career/life.

I keep watching this version and finding all kinds of things to talk about. First, Pilate here is terrorizing. His deep voice, his teeth when he sings are almost like fangs. Yet, he looks in so much pain when he can't save him. Some of the words have been changed from the original. Also, it's the people who flog him, they're the real killers. Fred Johanson as Pilate is my absolute favorite thing about this film. Honestly didn't like much Jesus or Mary or Judas, they are good just I don't like them much compared to other performers, but this Pilate I love.

As I commented before, this Pilate, in my estimation, is the very VERY best actor EVER out of all the many productions, stage plays, actors and actresses, songs, etc.! This guy RULES, and I can't imagine my opinion changing in all future productions!!! He's just so perfect in his role!!!

the screaming of the mob into CRUCIFY HIM CRUFCIFY HIM at 2:46 is so raw.

pontias pilate one of the most intimidating dudes in this scene and he is visibly scared by this mob. he's enormous, looks like an absolute badass, and his gear implies absolute ruthlessness. he towers over jesus, the pharisees, and everyone else. and yet he is still frightened by the savagery of the crowd he has to deal with. holy smokes, this scene is powerful.

I don't think Pilate actually wanted to help Jesus, he just wanted to keep order. And yet he wanted to let Jesus go, only because he saw an injustice being done. His hands were tied and he gave into peer pressure of the crowd driven on by the Pharisees and Sadducees. Admittedly this guy performance was a bit over the top but none the less a powerful one of Pilate.

Pilate had a dream (in the Bible as well as in the musical) about Jesus before he ever met him. He saw everyone blaming him for Jesus's death and it frightened him. You can see in the movie when Jesus stands up and looks at Pilate that he gets a look of remembrance on his face and becomes frightened. That's why at that point he's trying to do everything he can to save Jesus, he doesn't want his dream to come true.

You're wrong. There is none Pilate's dream in Bible, but you can find some words about dream of his wife:
"When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him" (Matthew 27 : 19)

This version of Pilate seems to really want to help Jesus. After the 39 lashes, he exhibits heartfelt compassion for him. It's a real crisis of conscience for him.

That's why I really like this version of Pilate.

The scene of the trial is great. All the post in scene, Fred Johanson he's a great Captain boss Pilates. And Glen Carter, make a great acting of Jesus. 39 th slashes was permitted on Rome to torture a man. 40 th can be the death. One of the bests scene!!

This'll sound weird, but I thought of this portrayal of Pilate as I was watching the character development of Boris Scherbina in Chernobyl. The real Pilate was probably a career military man and politician, and was sent to Jerusalem because it was a hot-bed of revolution and anti-Roman activity. In their mistake, they sent the one good man who could've made a difference. He ultimately did what was required to avert a complete breakdown in law and order, but the sympathetic portrayal of a man on the edge of what he knows is right and what must be done is something very VERY difficult to do.

The protagonist of Pilate was extremely interesting in the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov “The Master and Marguerite”. However, I never paid much attention to Pilatus in the JCS. Although the singer did a great job vocally in the 1973 film.
But Fred Johansson is outstanding. Both the singing and the acting quality forced me to repent and reconsider my carelessness towards the character. Bravo Fred, a masterpiece!

I dig the art direction in this version. The post-grunge art nouveau mixture is really cool (and somehow also excudes "early 2000s"). However, I do think I prefer the more subdued 1973 version. That said, the best versions I've seen have been off-Broadway productions, which tend to take a more historic approach to costumes. Although I saw a version once that was a combination of the 1973 and 2000 art styles, and that was a bit confusing.
