Guantanamera
Nia Correia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera
Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera

De mi Cuba soberana
Recuerdo aquel murburillo
Del rió junto al bohío
Que era una estampa cubana
Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera
Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera

Yo soy un sincero, dijo Martí
De donde crece la palma
Y antes de morir, yo quiero
Cantar mis besos del alma

Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera
Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera

Agua

Guantanamera (Guantanamo)
Guajira guantanamera (dícelo Anaju)
Guantanamera (te digo caballero)
Guajira guantanamera

Guantanamera (a usted que vola)
Guajira guantanamera (pa' que lo goce mama)

Guantanamera
Guajira guantanamera

Overall Meaning

The song "Guantanamera" by Nia Correia is a tribute to Cuba, its culture, and its heritage. The lyrics are a celebration of the guajira (peasant) style of music that originated in rural Cuba. The song is a reminder of the simple pleasures of life and the beauty of nature, as described in the lines "Recuerdo aquel murmurillo, Del río junto al bohío, Que era una estampa cubana" which translates to "I remember that murmur, Of the river by the hut, That was a Cuban scene".

The song has a political dimension as well, referencing the words of Cuban revolutionary poet and writer Jose Marti, who is mentioned in the lyrics as saying "I am sincere, said Marti, From where the palm tree grows, And before dying, I want, To sing my soul's kisses." The lyrics also mention Guantanamo, the location of the infamous US military base, where detainees were held without trial or due process. The song's use of the term "guajira" is significant as it refers to the rural and peasant culture that is often neglected and marginalized by the government and society in Cuba.
