Landslide
Nicks Stevie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I took my love and I took it down
Climbed a mountain then I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life

Uh ah
Uh ah
Uh ah

Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I'm getting older too

Well

Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I'm getting older too

Well, I'm getting older too

So, take this love and take it down
Yeah, and if you climb a mountain and ya turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide brought me down

And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills

Well maybe
Well maybe
Well maybe

The landslide will bring you down.

Overall Meaning

The song "Landslide" by Stevie Nicks is a deeply personal and introspective tune that speaks to the challenges of life and the difficulty of change. The opening line, "I took my love and I took it down," refers to the singer's decision to leave a relationship, while the second line, "Climbed a mountain then I turned around," indicates that the singer has made a significant effort to get to where she is. However, as she looks back at where she came from, she realizes she's not sure if she's made the right decision. The lyrics "And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills" refers to the idea of self-reflection and self-discovery. The image of snow-covered hills is a symbol of the coldness and isolation she feels as she confronts herself and the choices she's made.

The chorus of the song ("Can I sail through the changing ocean tides, can I handle the seasons of my life") speaks to the idea of being able to roll with the punches and adapt to the changes in life, while maintaining one's sense of self. The repetition of the lines "Well I've been afraid of changin'" and "But time makes you bolder, children get older" emphasizes the idea of how change can be difficult but ultimately necessary, and how it can be especially challenging when it involves relationships and growing up.

Overall, "Landslide" is a beautiful meditation on the complexities of life and the importance of self-discovery and growth, even when it's difficult.

Ain't it The Truth?

I first heard this as it was the ending credits theme on a wonderful film set in the snowy mountains of Colorado, IIRC. I am 61 now, it must have been 40-odd years ago. I don't remember the name of the film, but I never forgot this song.

I love this song so much...it always reduces me to tears!! Only because I know I’m getting older and you’ve built your life around your kids, I want them to see me in the hills and in nature when I’m no longer apart of this earth...mind you I plan to stick around for a lot longer ❤️
