Somebody
Niki & the Dove Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

? in the air, everywhere I go
The birds in the trees running …to you
It's even on the act and I just sing it on
Whoa if you wanna come, wanna go in the air
Baby, all the things that we can do
Now figure, all the things that we could ?
Baby, are you coming out tonight,
Or is it somebody else you're seeing
And if it's somebody you see,
You should ride and leave with me

Whoa, that pressure on my name
I know you live next door … on
I see it's something…sometime and always
? just a moment for joys
Get turn on with the stars above
? making it do, when the sky was young
Our love ? and it is so right

Whoa if you wanna come, wanna go in the air
Baby, all the things that we can do
Now figure, all the things that we could ?
Baby, are you coming out tonight,
Or is it somebody else you're seeing
And if it's somebody you see,
You should ride and leave with me

Are you coming out tonight, are you coming out tonight?
Whoa if you wanna come, wanna go in the air
Baby, all the things that we can do
Now figure, all the things that we could ?
Baby, are you coming out tonight,
Or is it somebody else you're seeing

And if it's somebody you see,
You should ride and leave with me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Niki & The Dove's song "Somebody" suggest a sense of romantic longing and desire. The phrase "in the air, everywhere I go" suggests that the subject of the song is somewhat ubiquitous, as if the singer cannot escape their thoughts or feelings. The metaphor of birds running to someone also reinforces this idea of chasing after someone or something. The singer seems to be expressing a willingness to go on an adventure, to try new things with this person, but they also express uncertainty - "Baby, are you coming out tonight, or is it somebody else you're seeing?"

The line "That pressure on my name" seems to suggest that there is a certain status quo or expectation placed upon the singer by society or others, and they feel burdened by it. However, they also express a sense of hopeful joy in the moment, with lines like "Get turn on with the stars above" and "Our love is young and it is so right". Ultimately, the singer seems to offer an invitation to the person they are addressing - to leave behind whatever is holding them back and ride away into the night with them.

I don't want to be 'that guy', but I could have done without the male vocals in the chorus. His voice is rather weak, and it didn't really harmonize with her voice in any way. Oh well, I still absolutely love this performance of "Somebody", it's such an uplifting and beautiful song.
