Nastasia has released six albums so far, the first of which, Dogs, was initially released in 2000 in a miniscule edition of 1000 copies on Socialist Records. The album sold out quickly and her subsequent albums, The Blackened Air (2001) and Run to Ruin (2003) were released on indie label Touch and Go Records. The label also re-released Dogs in 2004. All three albums were recorded by Steve Albini, as were later albums released on Fat Cat Records. These include On Leaving in 2006 and You Follow Me (produced in collaboration with Jim White) in 2007. Her sixth and most recent album, Outlaster, was also recorded by Steve Albini and was released in June 2010, preceded by the single Cry, Cry, Baby in May.
Nastasia was a favorite of late BBC disc jockey John Peel and recorded six sessions for his shows. The last one was recorded with the help of Tuvan throat singing group Huun-Huur-Tu. Nastasia also contributed a song to the tribute compilation for Peel named "Bird of Cuzco". Two of Nastasia's songs made Peel's annual Festive Fifty: "Ugly Face" (ranked 4th in 2002) and "You, Her & Me" (13th in 2003).

Ugly Face
Nina Nastasia Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't ever make it again
It's making me limp
In a wider space
I never know noticed
The sharp turns that it takes
Careless mouth
That come tumbling out
It should starve itself
I want you
I want you
I want to strike you
The violent face
Crashing into a chair
Dropping glass everywhere
It's an ugly face
Don't ever make it again
It's making me limp
I want you
I want you
I want to strike you
In a wider space
I never noticed
The sharp turns that it takes
The song Ugly Face by Nina Nastasia is a haunting ballad that speaks about the anguish and pain that someone's violent behaviour can inflict on their loved ones. The song is fueled by the singer's plea to their partner to stop their violent and abusive behavior, invoking a deep sense of fear and discomfort. The song's lyrics focus on the cyclical nature of violence, highlighting its destructive effects not only on the perpetrator but also on the people who love and care for them.
The song starts with the singer depicting their partner's actions as an "ugly face" that is causing them physical and emotional pains. The singer pleads with their partner to stop making these violent actions and to be more mindful of their conduct. They urge their partner to work on their behavior, warning them that it is driving them away. As the song progresses, the singer's tone becomes more desperate, and they start to wish harm on their partner, admitting that they want to "strike" them.
The lyrics take a darker turn towards the end of the song, with the singer highlighting the destructive force of their partner's violent behavior, depicting a chaotic scene where the partner's violent outburst leads to broken glass and damage. The song ends with the singer reflecting on how they never noticed how sharp a turn their partner's behavior could take and expressing their hope that their partner will finally be able to stop their violent behavior.
Overall, Ugly Face is a powerful and poignant song that explores the complex dynamics of abusive relationships. The singer's haunting vocals and the raw emotion of the lyrics create a sense of discomfort in the listener and invoke feelings of empathy and compassion.
