Charlie
No One Is Innocent Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Qui sommes-nous? (Charlie)
Qui sommes-nous? (Charlie)
Qui sommes-nous? (Charlie)
Qui sommes-nous? (Charlie)
Qui sommes-nous? (Charlie)
Qui sommes-nous? (Charlie)
Charlie

Citoyens, faut faire face
Face à eux faut faire front

Charlie parle-moi encore
Face à eux faut faire front

Charlie parle-moi encore
Vas-y parle-moi encore, yeah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Charlie" by No One Is Innocent are a powerful expression of solidarity with the victims of the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack in 2015. The repeated question "Qui sommes-nous?" ("Who are we?") emphasizes the need for individuals and society as a whole to reflect on their identity and values in the face of tragedy. The mention of Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic, highlights the attack on freedom of expression and the struggle against extremism.

Through the metaphor of "poudre" ("gunpowder") and "cartouches d'encre" ("ink cartridges"), the lyrics draw a comparison between the weapons of the attackers and the weapons of satire and journalism. The line "La plume est trop légère, face au plomb" ("The pen is too light against lead") acknowledges the danger faced by those who speak out against oppression and injustice.

The chorus of "Face à eux faut faire front" ("We must stand up to them") emphasizes the need for resilience and resistance against those who seek to silence free speech and thought. The lyrics underscore the importance of continuing to speak out and fight for our beliefs, even in the face of danger and intimidation.

(The crowd: « who are we? CHARLIE! »)

It smells the powder, the vile which resounds

Standing KO, I feel nothing anymore
Oh poor orphan Marianne
It’s not only CHARLIE that is being murdered YEAH!

With provocation they fight on the front lines

from laughers to tears with pencil strokes

Ink cartridges against ammunitions

the feather is too light to face the lead

Ah let’s crush the vile, rather die standing that to live on knees

In front of them we need to stand
Oh CHARLIE carry on talking to me

In front of them we need to stand
Come on carry on talking to me

We are not afraid of what we are

Proud to be unfaithful as dogs
Neither gods nor masters never in cage
After the mourning comes the rage
So let’s crush the vile, rather die standing that to live on knees

In front of them we need to stand
Oh CHARLIE carry on talking to me

In front of them we need to stand
Come on carry on talking to me

They said you had it coming

for being irresponsible, for playing their game

for adding again more oil onto the fire

here are the false friends, bastard's support

I am CHARLIE, plague of the charge (jury?)

Citizens we need to stand

In front of them we need to stand

Oh CHARLIE carry on talking to me

In front of them we need to stand
Oh CHARLIE carry on talking to me

Come on carry on talking to me
