David
Noah Gundersen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I keep kicking at the curb with my worn out shoes
And I keep running into stranger's that say I know you
And I don't wanna be a proud man just wanna be a man.
A little less like my father and more like my dad.
I wanna hunt like David,
I wanna kill me a giant man,
I wanna slay my demons,
But I got lots of them, I got lots of them.

I try to keep my conscience clean.
I try to keep myself out of your bad dreams.
I try to wash my hands for you every night,
Oh, lest you find my strangling fingers
Wrapped around tight.
I wanna hunt like David,
I want to kill me a giant man,
I wanna slay my demons,
But I got lots of them, I got lots of them.

I wanna hunt like David,
I wanna to kill me a giant man,

I wanna slay my demons,
But I got lots of them, I got lots of them

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Noah Gundersen's song "David" are a deep and introspective look at the singer's desire to be a better man, and break the cycle of toxic masculinity that he sees in his family. The opening lines paint a picture of a man who is lost, feeling aimless and without direction. He keeps running into strangers who claim to know him, but he cannot shake the feeling that he doesn't really know himself. He yearns to be less like his father, who he sees as a proud and domineering figure, and more like his dad, who he likely views as kinder, gentler, and more empathetic.

The chorus of the song is where Gundersen really shines lyrically. He wants to "hunt like David," a reference to the story of David and Goliath in the Bible. In that story, David is a young boy who manages to slay the giant Goliath with only a slingshot and a small stone. Gundersen is using this reference to show that he wants to overcome his own demons and struggles, which he compares to giants. He wants to "slay" these things that are holding him back and present an image of himself that is strong and capable. This is a powerful message, and one that resonates with many people who struggle with anxiety, depression, addiction, or any other kind of personal challenge.

Overall, "David" is a deeply emotional and introspective song that speaks to the struggles that many people face in their lives. It's a powerful reminder that we all have our demons to fight, and that it's okay to feel lost or uncertain sometimes. By referencing the story of David and Goliath, Gundersen shows that with determination and perseverance, we can all overcome our struggles and become the people we want to be.

Tarantino once said that when you pair the right image with the right song you get magic, and that is what happened with last nights episode of Sons of Anarchy. Fantastic song, brother. And thanks to SOA for introducing me to it.

You nailed it

What makes this song so badass is that it doesn't rely on screaming vocals or screeching rock instruments to convey the frustration expressed in the lyrics but instead has Noah singing the lyrics somewhat so calmly, it's kind of the like the 'calm before the storm'. Yet the storm part is actually within the lyrics, making this song even more complex yet so badass-ingly beautiful. Also, SOA FUCKING ROCKS!!!!
