Try as he may to avoid performing in public, however, music and his love for it inevitably drew him to the stage. In 1982, beginning in little known folk houses and bars to underground watering holes, Noel steadily made a name for himself in the local music scene.
In the year 1987, Noel, Rene Boncocan, and Rom Dongeto formed the group Buklod. Buklod was more than just a music group, with their albums oriented toward social, political, and cultural issues. The group came out with three albums -- "Bukid at Buhay," "Tatsulok," and "Sa Kandungan ng Kalikasan,” – each album espousing the advocacies of the group from the plight of the peasant farmers, to the protection of human rights, and to the conservation of the environment.
When the group disbanded, Noel set out on his own, playing at music bars and singing at private events. The years saw the creation of a loyal following that sought him out, wherever he played. He also began recording his solo albums. To date he has released 6 solo albums, 4 of which were produced by the Jesuit Music Ministry, 1 by Ballyhoo Records, and the latest by Universal Records.
Noel has also performed around and out of the country, doing concerts and performances in france, belgium, germany, switzerland, while his many advocacies have brought him to brazil, india, kenya, thailand, and hong kong, among others.
Over the years Noel has written songs for the causes he believes in and matters close to his heart. He has also written songs for other artists. Some of his songs have also found their way into movies, the most recent of which was “Ang Buhay Nga Naman” for the indie film by Soxie Topacio, “Ded Na Si Lolo.” “Ded Na Si Lolo” is also the Philippine entry into the 2010 Academy Awards.
Noel has also dabbled in theatre, as musical director, composer, or actor. He also teaches at the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), imparting his years of experience in workshops aimed at educating the younger generations on the importance of theatre.
Noel has had a long journey from being the shy boy who used to run from the audience, to the performer who never fails to awe and mesmerise his audience with his soulful voice and heartfelt music.
With almost 20 years of being a performer, and an untold number of years as a lover of music, Noel is still doing what he does best – writing music, and singing about the things that matter most to him. Years from now there is no doubt that Noel will still be doing these, and doing them well.

Maibabalik ba ang kahapon
Natatandaan mo pa ba
Nang tayong dal'wa ang unang nagkita
Panahon ng kamusmusan
Sa piling ng mga bulaklak at halaman
Doon tayong nagsimulang
Natatandaan mo pa ba
Inukit kong puso sa punong mangga
At ang inalay kong gumamela
Magkahawak-kamay sa dalampasigan
Malayang tulad ng mga ibon
Ang gunita ng ating kahapon
Ang mga puno't halaman
Ay kabiyak ng ating gunita
Sa paglipas ng panahon
Bakit kailangan ding lumisan
Pana-panahon ang pagkakataon
Maibabalik ba ang kahapon
Ngayon ikaw ay nagbalik
At tulad ko rin ang iyong pananabik
Makita ang dating kanlungan
Tahanan ng ating tula at pangarap
Ngayon ay naglaho na
Saan hahanapin pa
Lumilipas ang panahon
Kabiyak ng ating gunita
Ang mga puno't halaman
Bakit kailangang lumisan
Pana-panahon ang pagkakataon
Maibabalik ba ang kahapon
Lumilipas ang panahon
Kabiyak ng ating gunita
Ang mga puno't halaman
Bakit kailangang lumisan
Pana-panahon ang pagkakataon
Maibabalik ba ang kahapon
The lyrics of Noel Cabangon's song Kanlungan depict the nostalgia that comes with memories of the past. The first stanza starts with "Pana-panahon ang pagkakataon" which means "the opportunity comes at its own time." This line sets the tone for the song, highlighting the transient nature of time and the chances it presents. The following line "Maibabalik ba ang kahapon" means "can we bring back yesterday?" and suggests a longing for the past. The second stanza reminisces about the first meeting of two people "Nang tayong dal'wa ang unang nagkita" during childhood "Panahon ng kamusmusan." The imagery of flowers and plants in the lines "Sa piling ng mga bulaklak at halaman" suggests a sentimental and innocent time.
In the third verse, the artist refers to an actual location, "sa dalampasigan," where they spent a lot of time together as friends, "magkahawak-kamay," exploring their dreams and aspirations, "malayang tulad ng mga ibon." In the fourth and final verse, they meet again after a long time, but everything has changed, and they cannot find their old haven - "Saan hahanapin pa." The song ends with the repetition of the opening stanza, "Pana-panahon ang pagkakataon, Maibabalik ba ang kahapon," emphasizing the idea that time never stops, and we can only cherish memories of yesterday.

Pana-panahon ang pagkakataon
Opportunities come and go
Maibabalik ba ang kahapon
Can we bring back the past?
Natatandaan mo pa ba
Do you still remember?
Nang tayong dal'wa ang unang nagkita
When the two of us first met
Panahon ng kamusmusan
Time of our youth
Sa piling ng mga bulaklak at halaman
In the midst of flowers and plants
Doon tayong nagsimulang
That's where we started
Mangarap at tumula
Dreaming and composing poems
Inukit kong puso sa punong mangga
My heart was carved on a mango tree
At ang inalay kong gumamela
And the hibiscus I offered
Magkahawak-kamay sa dalampasigan
Holding hands by the beach
Malayang tulad ng mga ibon
Free like the birds
Ang gunita ng ating kahapon
The memory of our past
Ang mga puno't halaman
The trees and plants
Ay kabiyak ng ating gunita
Are parts of our memories
Sa paglipas ng panahon
As time passes by
Bakit kailangan ding lumisan
Why do they also have to leave?
Ngayon ikaw ay nagbalik
Now that you have returned
At tulad ko rin ang iyong pananabik
And just like me, you long for
Makita ang dating kanlungan
Seeing our old home
Tahanan ng ating tula at pangarap
Home of our poetry and dreams
Ngayon ay naglaho na
Now it's gone
Saan hahanapin pa
Where else can we find it?
Lumilipas ang panahon
Time goes by
Kabiyak ng ating gunita
Still a part of our memories
Bakit kailangang lumisan
Why do they have to leave?
Pana-panahon ang pagkakataon
Opportunities come and go
Maibabalik ba ang kahapon
Can we bring back the past?
Lumilipas ang panahon
Time goes by
Pana-panahon ang pagkakataon
Opportunities come and go
Maibabalik ba ang kahapon
Can we bring back the past?

Can't help but close eyes,
and all I get is nostalgic.
I don't know but I feel a strange feeling,
I don't know if it's sadness or happiness.
Am I missing something or someone?
I don't know.
Perhaps, it's the memories or experiences,
they seem to fade but every time I am alone,
it brings back the emotion.
Memories in certain happenings that can't be back,
It keeps people grounded in certain ways.
It brings different emotions,
but before it ends, it brings us the past.
