Sweet Dreams
Norah Jones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sweet dreams of you every night I go through
Why can't I forget you and start my life anew
Instead of having sweet dreams about you
You don't love me, it's plain I should know

I'll never wear your ring I should hate you
The whole night through
Instead of having sweet dreams about you

Sweet dreams of you things I know can't come true

Why can't I forget the past start loving someone new
Instead of having sweet dreams about you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Sweet Dreams" by Norah Jones and Jim Campilongo depict a person who is struggling to move on from a past relationship. The lines "Sweet dreams of you every night I go through, Why can't I forget you and start my life anew" illustrate the singer's frustration with themselves for not being able to let go. The repetition of the phrase "sweet dreams" emphasizes the pain of constantly being reminded of the person they are trying to forget. The line "You don't love me, it's plain I should know" shows that the singer is aware of the reality of the situation but still unable to move on.

The second verse continues the theme of being unable to let go, but with a sense of resignation. The lines "Sweet dreams of you things I know can't come true, Why can't I forget the past start loving someone new, Instead of having sweet dreams about you" imply that the singer knows their desire to be with the person from their past is fruitless, and they should try to move on to find happiness with someone else. However, they still can't shake the memories and the pain associated with their past relationship.

Overall, "Sweet Dreams" is a melancholic and relatable song that captures the pain of being unable to let go and move on from a past relationship. It's a reminder that although the process of moving on can be difficult, it's important to take steps towards healing and finding happiness elsewhere.

Norah is one of the most beautiful and talented artists of our time...Angelic voice that I never tire of...

Definitively the voice of an angel...beautiful.

How is this not credited to Jim Campilongo? So weird, none of the videos of this version of the song on Youtube seem to mention him. This track appears on his album "American Hips."

Nathan Crofton-Bond

There must be some sort of licensing issues because Jim's version isn't on YouTube, doesn't show up on the iTunes listing for American Hips and is unavailable on Spotify (though the rest of American Hips is, except for Stella - perhaps the issue is with Jones's record label?)

It's as if somebody is desperate for us not to hear it unless we buy a physical copy of the album. Perhaps it's a ploy to increase sales as they know Norah Jones fans will want to hear it thus purchase the album for those two tracks alone?
