I liked the sneaky reference to Ferrell's film "Anchorman"! After 25 years as an American ex-pat living in Norway and working as a professor at UiA, I was happily familiar with the rest. I recall the time when my newborn son was flown by helicopter for an emergency operation to save his life, operated, treated in ICU for 10 days, and flown home accompanied by a nurse. We stayed at the hospital's hotel the entire time. No bills, no insurance, no bankruptcy, just a national health care system at work. My son is 17 now, with only a scar across his stomach to show for his early ordeal. Paying my taxes is fine for me when I know the money is used honestly and fairly for all.

As an American, I just laughed at the arrogance of the 1,594th ranked university in the world, and its silly comparison of tiny, homogeneous Norway to the vast and diverse US instead of its actual equal: the single, middle-sized American state of Minnesota. Then I looked at the two college degrees I paid off, walked out the door and down to the beach...wearing a pair of shorts and a t-shirt in November...still laughing.

@François Coupal I think you're missing the irony of my comments, unless you actually think Venezuela and South Africa are better off. In the United States, a great deal of racial discrimination is predicated on the notion that diversity brings "enrichment". This same ideology is used to discriminate against "overrepresented" minorities as well like Asians, hence the focus on African Americans as the most underrepresented. This is a problem that Norway and Canada don't have, but the USA does, and that this video doesn't address. In that context, you can see the irony of a suggestion that Norway is full of people with common sense. If I were to say the same thing in America, and that that's the reason why we're less successful, even if it might be true for other reasons, it could be considered a racist microaggression.

The move AWAY from socialism around the same time we struck oil was why we have done so well in the second half of last century. Trump's fiscal politics actually aligned with our largely unregulated private free market economics a great deal. The reason people here have so much freedom and money isn't just our social welfare state, but because of the equal opportunity a free market economy provides. Just got a small piece of finger cut off. So far my bill is over $10,000. I pay for my(really good) insurance, so it's $300 so far. As a good progressive, have you looked behind the curtains to see where Norway gets all its money? It's from selling billions and billions of barrels of crude oil they pump from the North Sea oil fields. They sell that crude to other countries to fight climate change, to provide free tuition, to give maternity leave, and all the other "free" stuff. The only "great job" they've done is to feed people like you into believing that money grows on trees. Yes, it stinks. If you look for truth at all, you'll agree it all stinks.

I live on the beach. I paid for my BA and my MS. I have no debt outside of a reasonable mortgage. And I, like 90%+ of Americans, have full, low-cost health insurance. I have season tickets to the Dodgers and the Bruins, and I wouldn't move back to a climate like that of Northern Europe/Scandinavia unless you held a gun to my head. I spent a couple of years living in Germany, and it was nice for about three months in the summers...then the rest was sh*t; depressing beyond description. And this isn't even factoring in that there's no sense of infinite possibility/electricity that's present in so many American cities and states. So, good luck with that.

If what you say is true, then there are several other countries to choose from where I could go and get the medical help I need, instead of barely making it and living in constant pain. Besides, I don't see where them helping their economy like that is any worse than what the US and other countries like it are doing. I'm not condoning it. I hate the fossil fuel industry and hope one day that the world as a whole can move past it to cleaner, cheaper energy. Anyway, everyone's circumstances are different. Some people do great here. I personally would choose to live somewhere that would benefit my life more if I had the means and the chance.

@Granitt87 i make more than 100k $ and my tax is like 35% (i have a loan on my apartment so lower tax but who doesn’t). If you drive in Oslo, sure it’s expensive but you can literally just take the train or bus, it’s your choice to make it expensive. But no way it costs as much as you say then no one would drive in Oslo... I work in Oslo a lot and it’s packed with cars, i live in Bergen and it’s packed. Like where do these insane Numbers come from? And Yeah the company pays for the first 16 days you’re sick, but NAV still pays you after this. You can be sick for years (cancer etc) and still get paid through NAV (the goverment basicly).

@Vebjørn Ve Sæbø Paid sick leave is given by law in norway. They company pays for the first 16 calendar days. And companies ofc takes this in to account when adjusting salaries...

@Vebjørn Ve Sæbø I agree that the american health system is way to pricy.. But does not change that fact that the taxes in Norway sum's up to about 70-80% for us that earn around 100k. And if you drive a car near any city center you will be closer to 85%. And to be frank, that's just way to much.

With a socialized system i the US i suspect they could do a system close to ours for less.

@Granitt87 just to put it simply, 30k average income, 24% tax, 456$ per month for health insurance so 5472$ per year. If you include Health insurance in tax, you basicly pay 42.24% «tax» on average.

@ivanlagrossemoule I agree, crude oil export and natural gas exports are horrible for the environment but lets make a little comparison to the US here, who ranks in the top 5 crude oil exporters as of 2020, alongside Russia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates who cumulatively make up just shy of 51% of all crude oil exports. As for natural gas Norway does end up at the number 4 slot, shame on them I agree, but they are still behind, Qatar, the US, and our favorite terrorists in Russia!

Then we factor in relative environmental impacts, CO2 emissions, GHG total emissions, particulate matter, sustainability, society and lifestyle (such as car dependency), public transport use, land use, and we get some results that really show that the US is definitely not in a position to scold anyone environmentally, nor is Russia, or China for that matter.

@ivanlagrossemoule Yes. Australia once tried to pull a Norway and actually tax multi-national fossil fuel companies a fair amount. Said multinationals got their pet US government to interfere in our politics and effectively run a soft coup. Now any time an Australian government steps out of line, a US ambassador only has to mutter the name of a former ousted-without-an-election prime minister to pull them back on script. :-/

At least we try to nullify the effects, and we don't really use that much from our oil wealth anyway (only like 5%), we use money from our other industries like fishing. Most of our energy come from renewable sources like wind- and water - energy. Why did you get so triggered over a seemingly innocent comment? Literally every single nation on earth has flaws, nobody disputes that. In your view nobody has any right to proud of anything a country etc. has done because it has done (or is doing) bad stuff as well. Which is funny because i have a reason to assume you wouldn't say the same of your own country, or just ignore all of the bad stuff all together (is it reasonable to assume you're an american, and a patriot?). I have heard that sweden is the one that taxes like 60% but you do have a lot of benefits. I am from Colombia and things here are different. Middle Class workers don't pay taxes over income. Just for people with very good income. But our healthcare is trash that has to be paid. @jgadiaz the average income tax in norway is 28%. And it involves free healthcare (some copayments may occur for adults, but never more than $300 a year, including medications), free schools including university, income adjusted child care, 52-62 weeks paid parental leave, child benefits ($130 every month from birth til 18 years), 1 year full pay on sick leave (66% for the following year), income adjusted care for the elderly (retirement times and nursing homes), most vaccinations, and or course retirement payments from 67 years of age. Roads and infrastructure is also baked in to those 28%. I'm a single parent and that intails some deductibles, so my tax rate approximately 23%, and i also get additional reductions in costs for childcare. I just finished my masters degree, and paid a total of $90 in tuition during my education, and all students get state funded scholarships, so i baisicly got paid to go to school. (Please excuse any spelling misstakes, english is my secondo language).

Meanwhile check out Insulin (an example) prices compared between the countries. How much does it cost to give birth in a hospital in the US compared to Norway (free/included in the tax)?
