09I Can See a Liar
Oasis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, the time is right to tell it all like it is
And now that I feel god like there's nothing that can't be kissed
The name of a lonely soul is scratched into my brain
He thought he was King Creole
Until he found out, until he found out

He sits upon a throne
He lives a sleazy lie
But he's all alone again, again

I can see a liar, sitting by the fire
Trouble in his heart, laughing at the thought
Coming as he goes into overdose
I wonder what he thinks of me?

Baby, the time is right to tell it all like it is
And now that I feel god like there's nothing that can't be kissed

He sits upon a throne
He lives a sleazy lie
But he's all alone again, again

I can see a liar, sitting by the fire
Trouble in his heart, he's laughing at the thought
Coming as he goes into overdose
I wonder what he thinks of me?

Baby, you're a liar, sitting by the fire
Trouble in your heart, you're laughing at the thought
Yeah, baby, you're a liar, sitting by the fire
Trouble in your heart, you're laughing at the thought

Coming as you go into overdose
I wonder what you think of me?

Overall Meaning

In "I Can See a Liar" by Oasis, the lyrics appear to be about someone who is finally finding the courage to speak their truth, but they are also reflecting on someone who is a liar. The first verse indicates that the truth is going to be told now that the singer feels "god-like" and that someone's loneliness has impacted them enough to be engraved in their memory. The following verse describes the person as living a "sleazy lie" and "all alone again, again." The chorus speaks to the singer's ability to see a liar sitting by the fire, someone with trouble in their heart who is laughing at the thought. The final verse brings the focus back to the singer and questions what the liar thinks of them.

Killer vocal from Noel. Wish he sang like this more often.

Time To Wake Up

If you take this song and Put Yer Money Where Your Mouth Is, off of the SOTSOG record... And replace them with Let's All Make Believe and One Way Road, that album would be a true classic.

@just a nigga with a rocket launcher , I Completely Agree! But I'd take off Sunday Morning Call To! So I'd add Let's All Make Believe, Full On, Carry Us All n Keep I Can See A Liar though just so there's some Punk RnR in It! Cheers

@Hayden Frobenius the album would be flawless if that was the tracklist

Hayden Frobenius

No. Replace this and Put yer money where your mouth is with Full On and Carry Us all. Then, add Let's all make believe somewhere in there.

Saw this nugget of info regarding that the other day;

Fan Question: "Why was 'Let's All Make Believe' not on the album?"

Noel: "Well, I wanted it as the opening track, but then as it got moved further down, it didn't seem to have the impact as it did when it was the first track. And then Liam insisted that 'I Could See A Liar', the ninth track, be on the album, and the song just fell off. It's definitely one of my favorite songs that I've written, and it's a shame that it didn't make it, but never mind." [23 Feb 2000 - twec.com]

I think I prefer this version to the album version. Although that isn't a very high bar.
