Underneath the Sky
Oasis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Underneath the sky of red
Is a storyteller sleeping alone
He has no face and he has no name
And his whereabouts are sort of unknown

All he needs is his life in a suitcase
It belongs to a friend of a friend's
And as we drink to ourselves
We'll amuse ourselves
Underneath the sky
Underneath the sky again
Underneath the sky again

So wish me away to an unknown place
Am I living in a land with no name
I'll be making a start with my brand new heart
Stop me making sense once again

All we need is our lives in a suitcase
They belong to a friend of a friend's
And as we drink to ourselves
We'll amuse ourselves
Underneath the sky
Underneath the sky again
Underneath the sky again

All we need is our lives in a suitcase
They belong to a friend of a friend's
And as we drink to ourselves
We'll amuse ourselves
Underneath the sky
Underneath the sky again
Underneath the sky again
Underneath the sky again
Underneath the sky again
Underneath the sky again
Again again again again
Underneath the sky again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Underneath the Sky" by Oasis paint the picture of a storytelling loner that no one seems to know much about. The first lines, "Underneath the sky of red/Is a storyteller sleeping alone" establish a sense of mystery and otherworldliness that persists throughout the song. The storyteller is not given a name or even a face, leaving the listener to imagine their own version of this character. The songwriter goes further in creating an air of intrigue by stating that the storyteller's "whereabouts are sort of unknown." These lyrics suggest a sense of detachment or anonymity from society, and the storyteller seems to prefer it that way.

The song then shifts perspectives to the singer, who asks to be "wished away to an unknown place." This desire to escape and make a fresh start is a common thread in Oasis's music, and is likely a reflection of the band's own background in working-class Manchester. The reference to a "land with no name" further underscores the singer's desire for anonymity and a clean break from their past. The chorus repeats the line "all we need is our lives in a suitcase," which could be interpreted as a metaphor for the idea that personal possessions are all we truly need to start anew. The presence of the anonymous storyteller throughout the song suggests a kind of universal loneliness or search for meaning that many people can relate to.

I used to listen to this nearly every day when I commuted to my high school. So nostalgic...

@SimmyBassline

It's absolutely criminal that this wasn't ever a full A-Side release, it's my favourite track they've done!! I think it would have been a good seller, nice rhythm and easy to learn, sing along vocals 👌

@tommyhbk6458

Same and it hardly ever gets spoken about.
