Obituary is listed by Nielsen Soundscan as the fifth best-selling death metal band of all time and their albums have sold 368,184 copies. Their 1992 release "The End Complete" has also more than 103,378 copies in the United States alone.
After 1997's Back from the Dead album, the band had grown tired of touring which led to the band disbanding. During the hiatus, Donald Tardy played in Andrew W.K.'s touring band (during W.K.'s appearance on Saturday Night Live Tardy wore an Obituary shirt). Allen West focused on his two projects, Lowbrow and Six Feet Under while not playing in Obituary. Trevor Peres formed Catastrophic in 2001. The band reformed in 2003 and Catastrophic continued to exist alongside the reformed Obituary. Catastrophic released one album, The Cleansing, in 2001. Obituary's reunion album, Frozen in Time was released in 2005. The band's first live DVD, "Frozen Alive", was released in January of 2007.
Obituary are currently signed to Candlelight Records for their seventh album Xecutioner's Return, which was released on August 28, 2007.
Obituary's guitarist, Allen West, was recently imprisoned for D.U.I. (driving under the influence of alcohol) and released in January 2008. During his incarceration, Ralph Santolla served as West's replacement. It is uncertain at this time whether or not West will be returning to the band.

Rewind
Obituary Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Knows bored, minds cored.
Your fate has come rewound.
I thought the day I'd die you'd rule.
Rewind my sense.
Range choice of live expense.
Days come, nights fall.
When is locked in.
Set back within your realm of violence.
If you see anything, soon we'll rise.
Resign, my brain.
Knows bored, minds cored.
Your fate has come, rewound.
I said the day I'd rule you'd die.
Resign my friend.
Knows bored, minds cored.
Your fate has come rewound.
I said the day I'd rule you'd die.
The lyrics to Obituary's song "Rewind" are cryptic and dark, yet they hold profound meaning. The first line, "Resign my brain," suggests a sense of surrender or defeat, perhaps indicating the singer's desire to escape their current state of mind. The following lines ("Knows bored, minds cored") imply a sense of listlessness and apathy, as if the singer has become disengaged from the world around them.
As the song progresses, the theme of fate and control comes to the forefront. The line "Your fate has come rewound" suggests that some kind of cosmic cycle is at play, forcing the singer to repeat their mistakes and relive their past. The lines "I thought the day I'd die you'd rule" and "I said the day I'd rule you'd die" further emphasize the idea of power dynamics and the struggle for control.
Musically, the song has a driving, relentless quality that reflects the song's themes of fate and repetition. The growling, aggressive vocals and pounding drums create a sense of urgency and intensity, underscoring the song's dark lyrical content.

From about 2:28 - 3:35 is probably one of the greatest slices of recorded metal music I've ever heard. If I wanted to introduce someone to metal music in a minute, I'd show them this.
