Multiverse
Oblivion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In two different worlds
A quantum state does not count
Only many-worlds can explain
Quantum superposition effects
All possible alternative histories and futures are real
Prior to many-worlds, reality had been viewed as a single history

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Oblivion's song, Multiverse, are referring to the concept of the multiverse theory in quantum mechanics. The first two lines "In two different worlds, a quantum state does not count" suggests that in the multiverse theory, there are multiple versions of reality or alternate universes and in each of those realities, there could be a different outcome or state of things. This is because in quantum mechanics, particles exist in a state of superposition, meaning that they could exist in multiple states at the same time until they are observed or measured.

The next line "Only many-worlds can explain quantum superposition effects" is referring to the many-worlds interpretation which suggests that every time a particle interacts with another particle and changes its state, a new universe is created where the particle took the other state. This theory explains how all possible alternative histories and futures are real because there are multiple versions of reality existing simultaneously. Finally, the last line "Prior to many-worlds, reality had been viewed as a single history" suggests that before the multiverse theory, there was only one version of reality and everything was viewed as a single history.

Line by Line Meaning

In two different worlds
The concept of multiple parallel universes is introduced, implying the possibility of alternate realities.

A quantum state does not count
The laws of quantum physics dictate that a particle can exist in multiple states simultaneously, which doesn't hold true in daily life.

Only many-worlds can explain
The many-worlds theory is the only explanation for the existence of infinite parallel universes created due to quantum events.

Quantum superposition effects
Particles exhibit the ability to be in multiple states at once, and this effect is known as quantum superposition.

All possible alternative histories and futures are real
In the multiverse, every possible outcome of an event is realized, leading to infinite alternate histories and futures.

Prior to many-worlds, reality had been viewed as a single history
Before the many-worlds theory, the world was seen as linear, with one set of events leading into another without any deviation or change.
