Oceans Ate Alaska Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
For humanity's last breath and the
End of it all?
Flesh and bone turn to ivy and stone
Hiding in the shadows, are you all alone?
The vipers sing and the widows wail
Futile cries of mercy as the black ship sails
right, let's break down the lyrics of Oceans Ate Alaska's song New Dawn. The first lines, "Where will you be when the heavens fall? For humanity's last breath and the End of it all?" can be interpreted as a reflection on the human condition and the inevitable end of the world. The lyrics pose a question that everyone must ultimately face. It also suggests that humanity itself may be responsible for its own downfall.
The next few lines, "Flesh and bone turn to ivy and stone Hiding in the shadows, are you all alone?" can be interpreted as a metaphor for the end of life as we know it. The reference to "ivy and stone" suggests the erasure of humanity and the slow reclamation of the earth by nature. The line "are you all alone?" can be interpreted as a reflection on the thought that every individual must eventually face their death alone.
The last few lines, "The vipers sing and the widows wail Futile cries of mercy as the black ship sails" can be interpreted as a reference to death itself. The imagery is quite vivid and suggests that death is akin to a black ship that we will all eventually board. The "vipers" and "widows" may be interpreted as harbingers of death or death itself. The line "futile cries of mercy" may be interpreted as a reflection on the inevitability of death and how our struggles in the face of death are ultimately futile.
