Leaving of Liverpool
Off Kilter Lyrics

Farewell to Prince's Landing Stage
Mersey River, fare thee well
I am bound to Californ-i-a,
A place I know so well

So fare thee well, my own true love
For when I return, united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee

I'm bound on a Yankee sailing ship
Davy Crockett is her name
And Captain Burgess I know quite well
They say the man's insane

So fare thee well, my own true love
For when I return, united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee

So fare thee well, my own true love
For when I return, united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee

As I came down through Dublin city
At the hour of twelve at night
Who should I see but a Spanish Lady
Washing her feet by the candlelight

First she washed them, then she dried them
Over a fire of amber coals
In all me life I ne'er did see
A maid so sweet about the soul

Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Ray Lady
Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Rye aye
Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Ray Lady
Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Rye aye

As I came back to Dublin City
At the hour of half past eight
Who should I spy but the Spanish Lady
Brushing her hair in the broad daylight

First she brushed it, then she tossed it
On her lap was a silver comb
In all me life I ne'er did see
A maid so fair since I did roam

Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Ray Lady
Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Rye aye
Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Ray Lady
Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Rye aye
Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Ray Lady
Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Rye aye
Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Ray Lady
Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Rye aye

Overall Meaning

In Off Kilter's song Leaving of Liverpool, the singer bids farewell to Liverpool's Prince's Landing Stage and the Mersey River as they set sail on a Yankee sailing ship called the Davy Crockett to California. Though the leaving of Liverpool doesn't grieve them, they feel the pang of missing their true love. The captain of the ship, Captain Burgess, is known to be insane, adding a hint of danger to their journey.

As they reach Dublin city on their journey, the singer encounters a Spanish Lady washing her feet by candlelight, and later brushing her hair in broad daylight, finding her to be the sweetest and fairest maiden they have ever seen. These encounters are interspersed with the chorus of "Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Ray Lady" and "Whack for the Too Rye, ooh, Rye aye," adding a sense of playfulness to the otherwise bittersweet song.
