Old Man Luedecke left the big old city of Toronto, met a girl in the Yukon, fell in love, bought a banjo and fell in love again. After a couple of years of love and banjo and the makings of a brilliant performing career in sunny Halifax, he returned to the Yukon with his sweethearts. There he woodshedded. He wrote a ton of songs over the next year and a half. He held regular gigs playing banjo in a gambling hall with can-can girls and in a honky tonk called the Snakepit accompanying piano barnacle Bob. Even made an appearance at the Dawson City Music Festival. After a time, he left again for Halifax to renew musical acquaintances and record his debut CD Mole in the Ground. That CD has become a smash on college radio, was featured on CBC's Atlantic Airwaves and is a hot item in stores and at shows. He continues to live in Halifax and perform there and around the country to ever-wider acclaims. His stage show blends hokum and inspiration into powerful and fun entertainment that will delight young and old. He's still sweet on the girl he met up there in Yukon, and the banjo

Joy of Cooking
Old Man Luedecke Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To the more certain powers of the holy good book
He opened up a verse, then they read out the word
There was the voice of God and the answer that they heard
But as for me, I've a less (irracular behn??)
Spent most of my time, wondering where my time was spent
In particular desperasion on a Sunday afternoon
All I had is good and life was in some random swoon
Opened up a book, culinary survival
I took a lookin', the joy of cookin'
The joy of cookin', oh why oh, oh why oh
If I'm not mistaken, the answer's bacon
The answer's bacon, oh why oh, oh why oh
I went and got my frying pan, I cooked about a pound
Me and my little wife and children sat us down
And grace was spoken in that bacon scent was found
All I had lost was found
I took a lookin', the joy of cookin'
The joy of cookin', oh why oh, oh why oh
If I'm not mistaken, the answer's bacon
The answer's bacon, oh why oh, oh why oh
In the first verse of Old Man Luedecke's song "Joy of Cooking," the lyrics speak of our ancestors looking towards a more certain power - the holy good book - during uncertain times. They turned to the Bible, where they found the voice of God and the answers to their problems. However, the singer, who speaks for himself, has a different approach to things. He spends most of his time questioning where his time went, feeling lost and uncertain. But one Sunday afternoon, in particular, he found himself in a state of desperation, searching for something to give him hope. He turned to a book on his shelf next to his Bible - and it happened to be a cookbook.
The second verse is where things start to turn around for the singer. He took the book down and opened it up, only to find the "joy of cookin'." This was the answer he had been looking for - not some divine intervention, but the simple joy and comfort of cooking. He gathered his family and cooked a pound of bacon, which filled the house with a warm, delicious scent. As they sat down to eat, grace was spoken, and in that moment, the singer felt like all that he had lost was found. In this way, the "joy of cookin'" becomes a source of comfort and redemption for the singer, a way to find happiness and meaning amid the chaos of life.
