Later he went to Guayaquil where participating in the radio program "The Supreme Court of Art" began his career that led him to become a popular singer in the 50s.
In 1951, he traveled to Colombia with Plutarch Uquillas Pepe Jaramillo and integrating the "Trío Emperor." When the trio broke up, he settled permanently in Colombia where he developed into the most important stage of his career. His popularity transcended borders not only from Ecuador and Colombia, reaching Mexico where he recorded several albums and broke sales records with the bolero "Tears of Love." Then came other hits like Playita Mía, Tu Duda and mine, Our Pledge, fate, Five Centavitos, Licor Bendito and many more that would be interpreted by Julio Jaramillo.

De tu blonda cabellera,
En el rojo escarlata,
De tu boca tan divina.
Y en las fuentes hermosas,
De tus ojos hechiceros,
Es que busca mi alma,
La esperanza perdida.
Pero nunca te pude encontrar,
Y al fin te encontré,
Y mis sueños se han tornado realidad.
Dime que si que me quieres,
Dime que si que me amas,
Di si tus besos tan dulces,
Serán para mi.
Dale a mi vida la dicha,
Que tanto tiempo he buscado,
No te apartes de mi lado,
Y hazme feliz.
Yo te soñé,
Pero nunca te pude encontrar,
Y al fin te encontré,
Y mis sueños se han tornado realidad.
Dime que si que me quieres,
Dime que si que me amas,
Di si tus besos tan dulces,
Serán para mi.
Dale a mi vida la dicha,
Que tanto tiempo he buscado,
No te apartes de mi lado,
Y hazme feliz.
The Spanish language holds an inherently beautiful quality, and Olimpo Cardenas’ song "Azabache" is a prime example of this. The song starts off by describing the different colors that are present in the woman he is singing to. He refers to the black of her hair as "azabache" and the scarlet of her lips as "divina" or divine. He mentions how her enchanting eyes are like beautiful fountains and states that it is in these eyes where his lost hope is found.
The lyrics then shift to how he dreamt of this woman but was never able to find her until now. He urges her to tell him that she loves him and that her sweet kisses will belong to him, bringing happiness to his life, which he has been looking for, for a long time. The song ends with similar sentiments urging her not to leave his side and to make him happy.
The interpretation of this song is quite simple, focusing on love and the power it holds over individuals. The lyrics are typical of many love songs, but the use of poetic and uncommon words add an elevated level of elegance to the song. The song is a representation of the beauty of love, showing how it is able to weave dreams into reality and make life more enjoyable.

En el negro azabache,
In the black obsidian shade of your golden hair
De tu blonda cabellera,
That flows beautifully in blonde strands
En el rojo escarlata,
In the scarlet red of your divine mouth
De tu boca tan divina.
That speaks divinity and mesmerizes
Y en las fuentes hermosas,
And in the mesmerizing fountains
De tus ojos hechiceros,
Of your bewitching eyes
Es que busca mi alma,
Is where my lost hope seeks refuge
La esperanza perdida.
My lost hope, that seeks solace
Yo te soñé,
I dreamt of you
Pero nunca te pude encontrar,
But could never find you
Y al fin te encontré,
And finally, I found you
Y mis sueños se han tornado realidad.
And my dreams have come true
Dime que si que me quieres,
Tell me if you love me
Dime que si que me amas,
Tell me if you adore me
Di si tus besos tan dulces,
Tell me if your sweet kisses
Serán para mi.
Will be for me
Dale a mi vida la dicha,
Bring happiness to my life
Que tanto tiempo he buscado,
That I have been searching for so long
No te apartes de mi lado,
Don't ever leave my side
Y hazme feliz.
And make me happy
