The Original Twilight Zone is one of my favorite shows of all time. It is a very clever show that addresses alot of issues that are just as relevant today as they were when it was produced.

What alot of people don't know is that alot of these episodes were adatped from short stories and other writings. It is the template for how you tell stories.

Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad) has often said over and over again how one of his favorite shows is the Twilight Zone. Because the episodes ARE NOT about special effects, the episodes are all about pacing and how a story unfolds.

This is one of the reasons why television has become so great now as we are in this new Golden Age with streaming series and cable TV. The shows are being written to unfold and establish setting, plot and character. Peopel are now taking the time to be invested in the characters and can see the complexity of morality.

Many of the Twilight Zone episodes are exactly that. I would HIGHLY recommend this series to anyone wanting to see good quality story-telling.

There are quite a few episodes not mentioned here that are as good or better than these... they just don't have a twist ending.

Not only was Rod Serling far ahead of his time, he pure genius was being able to convey social commentary as science fiction, the occult, and paranormal activity; subjects that would have surely met the fate of censorship by any other conventional means.

He basically circumvented the media censors in a brilliant way, that nobody had done before, or even since. All these things going on now, were going on then in the 1950's. If you really watch them, you'd see he was actually prophetic in the messages he tried to convey to the masses. These weren't typical "horror" stories as one would think. Serling used that to depict the true horrors that he saw happening then, and that are actually happening today.

He wasn't ahead of his time. This show couldn't EXIST today. There would be far too many conspiracy nuts on Twitter and Instagram claiming the bizarre twists were real. If anything, Serling would have found our current "social media" landscape far more terrifying than any of his episodes. (K, maybe a bit of hyperbole, but Serling would approve, I think.)

He wrote a script for a TV show (I forget which one) about a black man who gets hanged in the south. The network (I forget again. I need to go back and re-read this stuff) asked if he could switch the story from the south to the north and make the black man white and to change the ending. He got so frustrated he decided to create the Twilight Zone where he could discuss social matters in a fantastical setting and nobody would question him about it because it wasn't 'real.'
It worked pretty darn well, didn't it?

Serling, Richard Matheson and Charles Beaumont wrote the bulk of the stories. You probably know or heard of Matheson (I Am Legend) but most likely haven't heard of Beaumont. Read about him. Strange sad story but a great writer.

you forgot about the twist ending in one of my favorite episodes; "a nice place to visit" where this criminal is shot down by the police during an attempted heist, and winds up in what he thinks is heaven, but as the episode goes further on, he gets everything he's ever wanted, and gets sick and tired of everything going his way, he even says he'd rather be in hell than spend anymore time in heaven, and THAT'S when he finds out he was actually in Hell the whole time!

"Ring a Ding Girl" is one of my favorites with a suprise ending. When Bunny tells the janitor not to go to the picnic and he himself gets spooked, that still sends a chill down my spine. The one sister frantically running around the house at the end looking for her sister Bunny and Serlings epilogue, still chills me to this day! Great, underrated episode...
Notes: Kurt Russell's dad, Bing Russell, plays the local TV host in this episode.
Earl Hamner Jr. who went on later to do the semi-autobiographical Waltons, wrote the episode.

I remember watching all of these scary Twilight Zone episodes when I was little, like 7-8 yrs old, & also Tales from the Darkside & more, whenever shows like that were on tv. I loved all those stories, as I was a big fan of scifi & horror stories from the time I was very little, although @ 1st it took quite a bit of convincing for my mom to believe it wouldn't scare me if there were monsters or murderers in a story.
At 5 I loved the Star Trek reruns on tv, even episodes with bad aliens & fights, so when Star Wars came out a few months before I turned 6 my mom took me to see it as a special treat. (Movies, even @ discount matinee prices & sneaking in our own home-popped popcorn in mom's purse were a big splurge for us, so she would never waste $ on something she wasn't 100% sure that I would understand intellectually & not be frightened by. I actually loved all the action scenes as much as the storyline.)
The thing was by the time I was 4 I was completely able to understand the difference between reality & make-believe, even while loving to pretend things like that my dolls came to life when no one was looking, & aliens, demons, fae, & dragons were real. I truly didn't have nightmares ever after watching a scary show or movie or reading a scary story, so by the age of 8 I was stealing all my mom's books after she read them. (Sometimes they were library books instead of borrowed from friends, so I had to read fast before she returned them for more novels. I quickly learned that historical ficton was just readable, historical biographies were interesting since they were real, but spy, scifi, & horror were my favorite genres & I couldn't get enough.)
By 8 I was a die-hard fan of Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, & so many more. After reading it I really wished The Martian Chronicles were true instead of fiction, except of course the stories about the astronauts who weren't believed & the children's playroom. I felt the playroom kids should have been eaten 🦁 but the parents should've lived to realize their wrongs & become better people who would be involved with their next kids. They were a bit emotionally neglectful of the kids, but it was apparent it was not intentional, so to me the children were sociopaths but the parents weren't bad people, just too immature to realize they weren't providing for their kids emotionally.

One of my all time favorites was the"Rip Van Winkle Caper" bad guys steal million dollars in solid gold bars.Go into suspended animation for 100yrs. thinking that when they awake their crime will have been basically forgotten.Being bad guys they do the inevitable and try to kill each other for the gold.{lots more to the story ,desert,water issues etc,]The kicker is ,as the last robber dies of dehydration in the desert a couple finds him dying and are perplexed when he offers them a gold bar for some water..In this time period gold has no value because chemists now can make it super cheap.Uh Oh sounds like our modern day currency.

Re: chemically extracting gold from sea water. Volume 3 in the Rick Brant juvenile series was called Sea Gold and included this theme. That would have been a 1947 juvenile novel. I always thought the Rick Brants and Ken Holts were significantly better than the Hardy Boys (though I collected them as well).

@Joseph Erhardt you do know that aluminum used to be more expensive then gold? it was because aluminum used to be incredibly hard to extract. a kilogram of aluminum in 1852 was 1200 dollars per kilogram while gold was half that. now a kilogram of aluminum is often under a dollar to two dollars depending upon demand. There have been several attempts to extract gold from sea water. There is estimated to be 20 mil tons of gold in the water of the ocean. Problem is a lot of it is organic bonded gold not metallic. However if someone figured out how to chemically extract the gold from sea water you could render the cost of gold to pennies per ton if it went widescale.

Also most of the gold today is used in jewelry or gold bars or coins as investment. Meaning the value of gold is severely over hyped. The amount of gold used for other applications is decreasing year after year due to the increased cost of gold since other metals can be used for those applications such as aluminum or platinum.

Also after a while you compensate to a point. He would have been able to read close up, and after awhile may have been able to get the book further away from his face. At the height of my pre lasik, I focused at an angle a few inches from my nose. (turn head to one side and look that ways at something head on) If I had quit wearing correction, my eyes and mind would have retrained to a bit farther out and more even. As Joseph Erhardt mentions... also going and finding some reading glasses, even if the fellow needed different strengths for each eye, it'd be pretty easy to swap a few lenses to get something that'd work well enough, then he would adapt to it. So it's only a short term issue. Really.

Reportedly, TZ actually got hate mail for that ending. It has since been used as an example of "irony porn," viz., the gratuitous use of irony without point.
Of course, as far as the story goes, he could have just scrounged through the remains of the local pharmacy for reading glasses and likely found some. Even if you deliberately throw glass-lensed glasses at a brick wall, you're unlikely to damage them to the point where you don't get some residual vision out of them, and so he'd be able to maneuver about in the town.

I'm 72 years old. Twilight Zone was my favorite show when it was first broadcast. ('One Step Beyond was a close second). Any of the last runner-ups' could have tied as the first place, especially the Burgess Meredith and Agnes Moorhead episodes. It's hard to convey the impact of these shows on the American psychological response back then. There was nothing like them on TV.

I would suggest reading the book written by his daughter that showed what a great guy he was and family man. But his smoking addiction really was his undoing..He wanted to quit too, but just couldn't shake a 3 or 4 pack a day habit. Rod died trying to start a lawn mowing and suffering a heart attack..

For some reason I knew the ending to this one before I saw it. I guess it's probably cause I'd been watching the show for a while before I came to that episode so I was able to get into Serlings head and knew where he was going with it

The way lighting is used throughout really caught my attention. The acting was very good and impactful. For years this was my number 1, but over the years "To Serve Man", "The Monsters are due on Maple Street", "The Obsolete man" have edged closer and closer. I really can't choose just 1.

Agreed. The key to the episode is your eye is fixed on the bandages which look kinda creepy themselves so seeing the staff's faces doesn't really come to mind.

YOu know, that's the funny thing, I guessed the twist within 3 minutes of the episode. That didn't harm my enjoyment, as it is a fantastic episode, but I was not shocked by that twist at all.

The Twilight Zone episode was adapted from a short story entitled To Serve Man, written by the science fiction writer Damon Knight in 1950. I had read it long before I saw the TV episode.

Just a thought that I've mentioned elsewhere: Given the plethora of videos on YT devoted to most scary and "best" ones (or even the ones that "teach messages"), for once, it would be nice to see a vid devoted to underrated TZ eps, particularly ones that are actually pretty funny--like "A Penny for Your Thoughts, "The Bard" and "A World of His Own"--or touching, like "The Big Tall Wish," "Walking Distance," "On Thursday We Leave for Home," "Mr. Denton on Doomsday," "A Passage for Trumpet," "Kick the Can." Really, there are so many good ones in the latter group, that illustrate the compassion of TZ and its writers (and don't necessarily send any "big social message"), that it does a disservice to TZ to merely focus on its horror/shock/social message factors. I'm thinking about the kind of "sweetness" that I think distinguished TZ from shows like "The Outer Limits" and even Hitchcock's programs.

Existential dread is more scary than any jumpscare every will be. I never realized how influential the twilight zone was but you can see how inspiration how bleed into other forms of media, black mirror stands out to me.

Stopover in a quiet town "Play things" was the second episode of the twilight zone that I saw, and when the little girl started laughing... OMG, that scared the crap out of me. Truly one of the most terrifying episode. Still today, that is one of my favorite episode.

No Shat. And no Billy Mumy. One of my favorites had Robert Lansing sent off to space in suspended animation for a long mission. He meets a woman (Mariette Hartley) shortly before the mission. After launch, he foregoes the suspended animation, so that he and Mariette can be the same age when he returns. When he returns as an old man, he discovers that Mariette (spoiler alert) decided to undergo suspended animation when he went off on his mission.

The episode, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is from a wonderful short story of the same name by Ambrose Bierce. The Twilight Zone was one of those rare things that has never been equaled since. There have been many imitators, but nothing seems able to come close to it in its purity of vision. No doubt this is due in large part to Rod Serling, who not only conceived the show, but wrote many of its episodes himself. Though many of the special effects are crude by our standards, it still holds up quite well, & is worth watching - particularly if you've never seen it. A true American original, & an unequaled masterpiece! Rikki Tikki.

I still remember that scene with a dude getting accosted by twoshady individuals who ripped his heart out and gave him amnesia and dependency as a "puppet" on them only to be trafficked.

The Outer Limits was a good sci-fi / horror series too - Robert Culp, Leonard Nimoy, lots of early showcasing of later-famous actors, and some bizarre and nightmarish scenarios

How We Differ was my favorite. It was the horror Sci fi Horror aspect of the episode I enjoyed the most. No other Twilight Zone freaked me out by the ending the most. I like how they set it up as almost a process of elimination. Each turn getting weider that the next. The episode has no flaws. It didn't come off as to fake since the main alien at the end only had a 3rd eye. To me it's a timeless masterpiece.

You know, prior to the Twilight Zone Rod Serling was an award winning dramatist who had received numerous Emmys for his teleplays. When he announced he was doing Twilight Zone people criticized him for taking a downward step away from serious drama. Sixty years later it's still being watched and talked about.

My favorite is Agnes Morehead who's brilliant acting , without saying a word, causes you to empathize with her horror as alien invade her remote and primitive home, only to find out in the end that earthlings are the invaders.

The best shock ending I ever saw wasn't on TZ. It might've been Outer Limits. These guys were flying through space to deliver some medicine to a sick planet but they crashed landed on some space rock. Then, one of the characters starts shifting between realities. The first was them trying to fix the ship and complete their mission. The second was they had completed their mission and were heroes. The guy kept trying to figure out which was real. At the end of the show, they revealed a third reality that was the real one and it was horrifying.

One of my favorites and I don't know the name of the episode is where the two families steal a spaceship and once there flying through space he points out where they're going and says you see that that's Earth that's where we're going and I thought they were on Earth all the time! All classics for sure! I have to agree with at least numbers 1 & 2. To Serve Man is my favorite. One note, I was greatly dissapointed in Jordan Peele's re-boot last year. Although I watched them all, the "twist" endings of the original were not there. I may check out the new season since I heard they will include a "To Serve Man" episodes. I also see a comment here about Rod Serling's to the original Planet of The Apes movie. One of the all time classics. Two other great stories he wrote "Requium for a Heavywieght" and "Seven Days in May". A great read about the man, "As I Knew Him" written by his daughter. The Twilight Zone, one of those shows you can watch over and over, even though you know what's going to happen.

I once saw a Twilight Zone (or was it Twin Peaks) episode where a guy gets detained by two shady individuals who ripped out his heart, leaving him a dependent "puppet" with no memory or independence to 2 shady grinning individuals planned to traffick him.
Still gives me shivers to this day.

One of my faves, though it didn't have a twist ending, was the guy who orbited Earth and ended up in a parallel universe where things were just SLIGHTLY different enough to clue him in. Yet, his little girl KNEW he wasn't her correct father.

Crazy thing is a lot of the plots were actually analogies on life in general. Topics on race, politics, greed, religion. People get upset when it's brought up to day in media but they did it in a roundabout way & not so in your face that made u think in the end without being heavy handed with it. Twilight Zone was genious.
