Twa Corbiez
Omnia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I was walking all alone
I heard two ravens cry and moan
The one onto the other did say-o
Where shall we go and dine today-o?
Where shall we go and dine today?

Out beyond that old high dike
I know there lies a murdered knight
And no-one knows that he lies there-o
But his hawk and his hound and his lady fair-o
His hawk and his hound and his lady fair

His hound is to the hunting gone
His hawk to fetch the wild bird home
His lady loves another knight-o
So we may make our dinner sweet-o
So we may make our dinner sweet

So you may sit on his white thigh
And I’ll peck out his bonny blue eyes
And with a lock of his golden hair-o
We’ll fix our nest when it grows bare-o
We’ll fix our nest when it grows bare

There’s many a one for him does moan
But none will know where he is gone
And o’er his bones when they lie bare-o

The wind will blow forever more-o
The wind will blow forever more

Overall Meaning

The song "Twa Corbiez" by Omnia is a haunting ballad about two ravens who stumble upon the carcass of a murdered knight and contemplate where they shall feast. The lyrics, written in old English, are steeped in symbolism and metaphor, creating an eerie sense of foreboding. The ravens discuss the whereabouts of a suitable meal, and one of them suggests the corpse of a murdered knight lying beyond an old high dike. The other raven agrees and reveals that the only creatures to know of the knight's resting place are his hawk, hound, and lady fair, who loves another knight.

The ravens plot to feast on the knight's flesh and make their dinner sweet. They plan to dine on his thigh, peck out his blue eyes, and use a lock of his golden hair to fix their nest once it grows bare. The lyrics suggest that the knight was a man of some importance, with many mourners who will never know where he is buried. Eventually, the wind will blow his bones bare, and his resting place will be lost to history.

The song's lyrics are based on a traditional Scottish ballad, and Omnia's version infuses it with a modern twist, adding electric guitar, bagpipes, and other instruments to create a haunting melody. The song's macabre subject matter and foreboding tone make it a standout in Omnia's discography, the lyrics tackling themes of death and decay, reminding us that all things must come to an end eventually.

Outro…

The main part of the album "A... New Stories From An Old Book..." (except for the last two songs) was created by me in 1994-1995. It was based on the texts of old ballads, as well as poems by poets of Great Britain and Ireland of the 18th and 19th centuries (Robert Louis Stevenson, Walter Scott, George Gordon Byron, Thomas Moore, etc.). You can find some information about this, as well as lyrics and information about the musicians who provided their recordings for the sampler, in the "Lyrics" section, which is attached to each music composition (if this feature is supported on a specific site for streaming music). You can copy texts and information and translate them into your native language (many browsers have a built-in translator)!

@jrtomlin1805

Not really. It was written in Scots and should be sung in Scots. Really loses its effect in English.
