On a cloudy night in Austin, Texas during the annual SXSW festival, the thr… Read Full Bio ↴On a cloudy night in Austin, Texas during the annual SXSW festival, the three members of ON AN ON were waiting in line to see Miike Snow; they were a bit sweaty, undeniably hungry, and, well, kind of drunk. The Chicago & Minneapolis-based musicians – Nate Eiesland, Alissa Ricci, and Ryne Estwing — that comprise the band had played music with one another in various capacities for the better part of a decade — most recently as members of indie-pop outfit Scattered Trees, with whom they were performing that very weekend. And while they’d always shared something of an unspoken musical connection, the three of them, at that very moment, felt a different sort of bond; together they had an insatiable impulse to flip the script on everything they had known about making music.

Conservative compromises would be a thing of the past; ON AN ON, as they would name their band, would make music and art that melted outside the lines. It was perfect timing: they were already scheduled to record in a Toronto studio in two week’s time with acclaimed producer, Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene). With a knack for genre-melding, and a boundary-pushing mindset, Newfeld would prove to be the perfect match for the trio’s new caution-less approach: synthesizers, scattershot electro beats and ambient ear candy would give guitars, bass and drums a newfound ghostly sheen. The end result was Give In, ON AN ON’s ten-track debut album – a dream-washed textural journey armed with a biting perspective on the commonality of loss. The affair sizzles with electricity and calls one in with its unnerved openness. It’s a project – and approach to music — the three musicians in ON AN ON had been waiting for.

I was only a child in the 80's, but her music was so influential. She was so much a part of my life. I often think of songs as bookmarks in the chapters of our lives....this bookmark brings me back to Vancouver, B.C. I had just moved there with my Mother and Sister and reunited with two Aunts and several cousins. It was this time period that I absolutely fell in love with Whitney...such an incredible talent that would never be matched! I feel so privileged to have witnessed her journey!

This song gets me emotional, among other tracks. When I was 8 years old in 1986 when I first Whitney belting out "Greatest Love of All" and this album, she became a hero to me with her voice that year. I had this pink radio with a tape cassette deck and microphone, and I would sing along to Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson tracks mostly. I actually the first two Whitney Albums, on tape. And I think of my mother who is in heaven. They are both in heaven, "Whitney give my mother a hug for me".. My mom loved Whitney's voice also. This song is a tear jerker. R.I.P to two angels.

The song "if leaving me was easy" by Phil Collins also said how i felt. My ex made no effort at all. I knew what was gonna happen but i couldn't prevent it. It was like watching a train crash in slow motion. I tried absolutely everything. I know now that she didnt know the meaning of love.

I feel the hurt of what she went through her childhood and her adulthood. She like a old soul of what I see her interviews since she was younger back then because she old fashioned who wear comfortable clothes like * jean pants, t-shirt, suits, like my grandma was old fashioned. It really hurt my heart right now because I am not happy when they judge down on people who went through their life struggles. This is my favorite Whitney Houston song because she sings this so very sweetly. ( Sad lyrics though) This song has a very nice tempo. As the song progresses she adds layers to it. She has a great falsetto on some words and some words are nuanced - for example the word “All” at once becomes “H”all” - at once - because as she builds momentum, her breath naturally changes and pushes the word from all to “hall”.I can definitely hear it. Also, near the end the word “know” becomes “Know-ah” And finally, she belts out the lyrics and then pulls it back in to say “in someone else arms” , you can hear the hurt expressed in her voice. She sings this song MASTERFULLY
And for me I think Donna Summer was close second.

Her songwriting was extremely limited, as you pointed out--credits on only ten songs and nine of the ten involved anywhere from three to nine (!) writers. The only song she ever co-wrote with just one other person was "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" with Diane Warren. Houston has zero credits as a sole writer of any song.

The term musician to me is more accurately reserved for someone who can compose/write music and/or plays instruments (not just add a lyrical phrase or two, as seems to be the case with Houston). You've got folks like Stevie Wonder and Prince and Kate Bush who are savants--can literally write all the songs on an album, sing them all and play every single instrument if they care to. And as much as people never want to give Madonna credit for musical artistry, she is certainly a true musician--she writes or co-writes 95+% of her music, sings it all, plays acoustic guitar (and in her early days, percussion). And she was like this from the start; her first top five hit--the indelible "Lucky Star"--she has sole songwriting credit for it.

Lastly, I'd like to mention that when I saw Dolly Parton at the Hollywood Bowl four years ago she not only sang brilliantly and charmed the heck out of the audience with her great stories and fine sense of humor, she also played the acoustic guitar, the recorder, the fiddle, the piano, the banjo and...the saxophone (!) which was nearly half her size. The entire show was astonishing.

I watched the movie the Bodyguard last night, and I can't get her off of my mind. Amazing how you can love someone you never met. Whitney Houston was a true legend. and the fact that she has moved on to the other side makes it so bittersweet to remember her. I know she is having fun and Laughing now in Heaven.
